Christie from Greece asked

Restaurants, Café, Pubs, Bars in Budapest

Hi everyone!

I would like to know some affordable non-tourist places to eat traditional / local food (or any other cuisines) and somewhere to have a coffee or a drink / beer in Budapest.

Thank you in advance!

Budapest

Hi Christie

I echo Miklos's answer about the markets. The main market hall in Budapest has loads of cheap eateries, plenty of locals eat there.

One of the street foods is langos - battered and deep fried potato - try it locals' style, which is smothered with sour cream and cheese. It's pretty much a heart attack on a plate, but delicious!

I wrote a bit about eats/experiences/costs in Budapest here:

Don't miss out on the wine, either. Hungarian wines are goooooood :)

Have fun, it's a wonderful city!

Julie

First of all, most coffee is really good in Budapest. Just dash into any cafe you walk by on any of the boulevards in the city and you will not be disappointed. Cheap traditional foods can be found in markets and some hidden, basement and "hole-in-the-wall" type places only the locals know about. "Affordable" can be a wide-scale depending on one's situation but for traditional meal recommendations see my answer here (the Menza is "affordable" in my book and has great food): http://www.trippy.com/a/55d0f67ae4b07ffcaeb5ff3f/54dba626e4b052760d657be7

Hi,

For having a beer you should try Jónás Craft Beer House at the Bálna Budapest building, or Élesztő. For coffe you should try Fekete, Budapest Baristas, Tamp & Pull Espresso Bar (next to Bálna), B&O play (also in Bálna), My Little Melbourne Coffee and Brew Bar, Madal Cafe - Espresso & Brew Bar, Ecocafe, London Coffee Society.
