So, if you wanted to do this, probably add a week to your travel time. I think it would be. a long two day (around 15 hrs at least) drive up to Portland from Las Vegas. It is not "On the Way" so to speak.

Not much. Drive to Memphis, TN to Oklahoma City, OK to Albuquerque, NM to LV. From LV, NV to Battle Mountain, NV. Then to Portland, OR.

Vegas is really far out of the way, but I guess if you have a couple weeks to drive cross-country, then you could do it. Start with a general route like this:

Then customize it to add a lot more stops along the way and increase the total number of days. If you have a lot of time, you could consider doing the last leg from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, then up the coast through San Francisco to Portland. Or if you're staying inland, plan for some of the national parks along the way.
