Between Charlottesville and Boston the halfway point is probably around Trenton NJ on I-95.  I think probably Princeton (New Jersey) would be a more relaxing and interesting place to spend the night.  But that would require leaving I-95 and driving on US 1 for awhile.

If you didn't want to do that, there are good examples of chain hotels (Quality Inn, Days Inn, Holiday Inn) which are relatively inexpensive (around $90 a night) near a place called East Windsor (New Jersey) - 297 miles from Charlottesville and 265 miles from Boston.  I haven't stayed there.  The hotels in Princeton along US1 are a little more expensive - I have stayed in Princeton but I don't remember what hotel we stayed at.

Washington, DC and Philadelphia! So much to see in both places. Of course history is prime but museums are plenty.
