Eat/Hike/Anything else for 1-Day visit?

Mid-July college tour of Virginia Tech for my 17 year old, with 12 year-old younger sister along for the ride.  We have condo -- 2 nights --  in downtown, so we will wake up and have a full day (minus 3-hour college tour/session) to do whatever.  With car.

We don't have to eat out (condo has kitchen) but could be enticed out by the right cheap-to-moderate fun place.

Barring 110 degree weather, getting out into nature could be really nice.

Anything else hidden away in Blacksburg area that we should know about?  No interest in sports.  Much interest in arts and science.

Thanking you in advance...

  1.   http://gilescounty.org/cascades.html  is about 45 minutes away and really pretty. It's a lot of uphill, maybe 3 miles each way, but not too steep. Follows the waterfall/river most of the way. Also cooler than Blacksburg (which itself doesn't get that hot, usually under 90F).
  2. Mountain Lake Lodge, where they filmed Dirty Dancing, is 30 min away (and on the way to the Cascades, above).  Nice hiking with pretty views. Bald Knob is a strenuous hike (maybe a mile or two but a lot of elevation gain) with a pretty view of the valley. Most other hikes I've done there don't have much view.
  3. Mountain Lake Tree Top Adventures is a fun (although a bit pricey $45/person IIRC) ropes course. Everyone I know who's done it loves it.
  4. Pandapas Pond is nice (although not as much as the two above) but it's only 10 minutes from BB'g, and also on the way to the above two.

1 thanks
