Almost anything in the main Hoover area is safe. Don't know where you're coming from, but both 65 and 459 go through Hoover.
Embassy Suites by Hilton Birmingham Hoover
Courtyard by Marriott Birmingham Hoover
Holiday Inn Birmingham - Hoover, an IHG Hotel
All in a nice area, and there are places to eat nearby. Plenty of gas stations for refueling (including a Costco with a gas station if you're a member). Walmart is REALLY close to those and a Target is fairly close for supplies if needed.

Stay in the uptown district. Several great hotels (Sheraton Birmingham Hotel & the The Westin Birmingham) are two favorites. Also, there is great food all around.
