Chicago
I'm freezing in Chicago and need to get somewhere warm! What's the best place in the NW hemisphere to go between Jan and Mar? Looking for a quite, beachy spot that's more luxurious than outdoorsy.
Have you considered a cruise? No seriously. They are a bargain and will take you away to several beachy desinations. One price pays for almost all your costs and you get to see several countries in one go. Try one leaving from Florida or New Orleans to the Carribean and back. I just returned from one and I can tell you the northerners were happy as clams and toasty warm!
I'd recommend a beach resort either in the town Playa del Carmen or a bit further south on the way to Tulum. The further away from Cancun, the quieter it will be. The beaches have really nice white sand and the prices are generally a good value. If you get bored, you can do a day trip on the ferry to the island of Cozumel, which is one of my favourite places in the world. What a shame the resorts there have to import the sand as they don't have natural beaches. But for shopping, food and nightlife it's a really great place. Especially at night after all the cruise ships leave!

My husband and I just returned from Punta Cana. We stayed Excellence Punta Cana. We were very happy with our stay and play to return. The pool was gorgeous, beach lovely, weather was great (80's), and the staff was friendly and helpful. We thought our resort was more gorgeous than the others we saw. This was an inclusive resort. There were 10 restaurants-French, Italian, Mexican, oriental, steak/chop house, tapas. Food was more than acceptable. Many activities, met many interesting people. When we searched for a resort we used AAA and TripAdvisor. Saw no negative reviews. It was a great trip! Good luck!
I definitely echo the mentions of Mexico. Cabo San Lucas and Tulum have been among my favorites. During the winter months, I also prefer Hawaii. If you're looking for luxury (and a little more low-key), then I prefer Kaua'i. If you want a little bit more action, then Maui.

Just got back from the Atlantis Paradise Island in the The Bahamas. A little pricey but well worth it. My husband and I along with our family have been going every couple of years since 2001 - So much to do in one place. Weather is beautiful every day. They are continually adding to the list of things to do.

Cabo San Lucas my friend. 85 degrees and cloudless days . Water is warm and get an all inclusive hotel. You can be as active as you want. Golf, scuba, whale watching, jet skis, all of it. Or have the hotel staff bring you a mud slide every 37 min until you pass out. One week is perfect.
Anguilla -- rent a house there and get a car to check the island out.
Playa del Carmen -- Awesome and short flight. Tulum is cool too.
Barbuda -- Not built up and beautiful -- easy flight from antigua too.
Negril -- Check out Rockhouse Hotel really cool concept and beautiful.
Bonaire -- Remote but beautiful.

It's been said a few times here before but Playa del Carmen and the resorts in the area all the way down to Tulum are a personal favourite of mine. You can definitely find some luxurious accommodations and some of the best beaches I've ever been too. I'd definitely recommend the smaller boutique resorts, the large chains can be really overwhelming and I find not as relaxing. You can usually score some amazing deals as well especially if you're flexible with dates or booking at the last minute.
Also if you've never been to Jamaica, the north side of the island with Negril Montego Bay and Ocho Rios are all winners. I feel like they've got more local culture then the resorts in Mexico but they're usually a bit pricier.

I really liked St Lucia. We stayed at the La Haut Resort... nothing fancy, but up on a hill with gorgeous views of the sea & the Pitons Bay. However, do not, do not, do not fly in & out of Atlanta!! What a nightmare that airport is!!

a cruise to the Caribbean! You'll be pampered on the ship and wake up to a new island almost each day. You're in port for 6-8hrs each stop, so plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful beaches. Sunset sail-aways are breath taking!
I would suggest Mexico. First, it's easily accessible from the States and it's not a terribly long flight (from MN). I have traveled to Mexico during January a few times and the weather was always perfect! I recommend Playa del Carmen,Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, and Cabo San Lucas. Try booking your flight with your hotel accommodations to save money or try booking an all inclusive place.
Hotels I've previously stayed in are the Riu Palace in Cabo. Although this place is quite pricey, RIU offers hotels right next door that are more affordable. The plus of the Palace is it gives you access to every RIU hotel down the strip, whereas the other hotels only give you access to their location or lesser ranked RIU hotels. I've also stayed in the Barceló Maya Palace Deluxe, which is another all inclusive. For Cancun, I recommend the Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort. Unfortunately though this one is a little pricier but what's nice about this location is the rooms have kitchens in them and you can have your cab stop at a grocery store and pick up food for the week and just prepare it there!
Hope this helps!!!
