It's not a hostel.. it's a posh-tel! I'm curious to know what are the best chic hostels you've stayed at on your travels? What characteristics set them apart from a typical hostel?
I can vouch for Sir Toby´s Hostel in Prague, their owner also operates another trendy hostel called the Czech Inn, Prague. If you plan on travelling around Europe then there is an organization called Europe's Famous Hostel. You can't really go wrong with any of the listed hostels and I have stayed in St Christopher's Inns in Paris, Czech Inn in Prague, Bauhaus Hostel in Bruges, Cats in Madrid and Home Youth Hostel in Valencia. All had good friendly atmosphere and fun travelling community.

My jungle hammock.... Anywhere I want to be!
built in mosquito net and rain fly, it's also my camp chair and cloths line. any hostel that's not urban will let you string one up for a couple bucks or a beer. It's a win win for the hotel/hostel/home owner, your only paying for two trees lol. And if its a gated property it makes your wife sleep easyer! I'm a huge fan of setting up 20 feet off the road.
I'm heading to Southeast Asia and hope that this tactic works there. Let me know if anyone else has done this. Thanks
Sir Toby´s Hostel is by far one of the best Hostels I have seen! It is close to many things in the city of Prague and even has a pub downstairs (as well as a kitchen to make food yourself). The people who stay are mostly younger but I did see a couple of 50 something year olds while staying there. They have computers in the lobby so you can Skype your friends and you can even have your own room (umm is this even a hostel?!?)... Try Krušovice beer in the pub downstairs while making some new friends with people from all around the world! Its a world class hostel of its own :)
Freehand Miami is one of my favorites. The location is away from the crowds but close to the beach. They have private rooms and two different hostel rooms (4-bed and 8-bed). The rooms are really well designed, not only in how they look but also functionally. The 8-bed rooms have two private bathrooms inside the room which I have never seen anywhere else.
The other thing that sets it apart is that the bar actually attracts people living in Miami. This gave it a more diverse mix of people compared to a lot of hostels.
Overall, I would say that functional design, good location and interaction with local people are most important in these types of hostels.

Been to many chic hotels around the world. Recently ,i stayed in this boutique hotel in New York City in Times Squarearea called Ameritania Hotell. Very impressed with the chic design of my room as well as their reasonable price ( i was there August 2014) and friendly staff. Here is the photo of my room with the ceiling light and clock.

I haven't tried it myself, but City Circus Athens Hostellooks like it ticks most of the requirements of a chic hostel. What do you think?
The most chic hostel I've ever had the pleasure of staying at was Kex Hostel in Reykjavik.
I've been quite lucky with hostels during my travels and have stayed in two that really stuck out. Casa Gracia in Barcelona, Spain and Fresh* Sheets Hostel Dubrovnik Old Town in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Both had very clean and beautiful decor but what really set them apart were the staff and and communal spaces. Though Casa Gracia is a pretty large hostel the staff went out of there way to help me make the most of my time in the city, they also have a great communal space that makes it easy and effortless to connect with other travelers. Fresh sheets is a much smaller hostel that has a very intimate and homey feel. I hadn't originally intended to stay there but I went a day early and the other hostel I had booked was full. I had such a great experience on my first night that I cancelled my other booking and stayed there instead.

I think many hostels in Bangkok are matched the concept. However, I never sleep there. I'm Bangkokian!
The posh-tel I've been is in Tiong Bahru, The Plot Hostels in Singapore. Tiong Bahru district which named "The hipster neighborhood".
Design by famous designer mentioned his name in hostel's website. All equipment and materials are well selected. Their lift is so cool!
