Interested in history & culture. What are the must-sees? Is Tiananmen Square interesting? Is the Silk Market worthwhile?

Second Day:Yonghegong Lama Temple(The biggest Lama Temple in Beijing?), The Wangfujing St(You can have some snacks there),Tiantan Park(it's amazing);

The Third Day: Yiheyuan Park (also known as Summer Palace ) and Yuanmingyuan Ruins Park (Seeing what had the British and French done to the Greatest Park)

The forth Day: Great Wall Of China and the Ming Dynasty Tombs(it`s really far away from the city of Beijing and you can make this plan for two days)

The fifth Day: You can have a break (have some drink in the bars on Sanlitun Bar Street)

As a Beijing local, I would suggest:

1 day: Tiananmen Square-Forbidden City-Jing Shan Park

2 day: Summer Palace and Beijing University (strongly recommend afternoon tea at The Aman at Summer Palace)

3 day: Great Wall Of China

4 day:  Visit Hutong and Courtyards and National Museum of China/modern art 798 Art Zone (if you are into arts)

5 day: The Silk Road or Panjiayuan Flea Market, if you like shopping

At night, I would suggest Sanlitun Bar Street and Nanluoguxiang for bar hopping

Don't be overwelmed, I am more of a casual traveller, the above is totally managable if you plan it right.

I would say to definitely go and see The Forbidden CityGreat Wall Of China, Summer Palace, and Tiananmen Square. If you go though, make sure you have a guide, because they will be able to tell you a lot about each place. Have fun!!

Agree with Carrie's recommendations. I would add Temple of Heaven .  It's a beautiful temple set in a peaceful park

If you are interested in history and culture, then the National Museum of China and Capital Museum should be taken into consideration besides other five must-sees in Beijing. The silk market is just a dirt market, maybe the Liu Li Chang Cultural Street is more suitable for you. Check out my site www.chinabeijingguide.com for more things to see in Beijing.
