I am traveling to Beijing next month and just wondering if there are some nice areas of town worth staying in?
For example, in Shanghai I stayed in the French Concession area and it was absolutely beautiful! Are there any places similar in Beijing? Perhaps more traditional, older parts of town, with some charm? Nice bars, cafes and shops?
Shichahai (什刹海) area contains the largest and best-preserved age-old block in the city. It is located situated in the west of old Beijing. It is well worth the visit as it lends one an image into the life of the old city. You can use airbnb find some information about Beijing Horizon View Penthouse, a kind of traditional house in old Beijing. Lots of foreign visitors prefer to live there.
YES, you can stay near by Shicha Lake. There are many theme hotels about older things like shadow play and ancient architecture. At night you can drink in the bar nearby the lake. and you can have a roast duck. Many old shops in the street have a long history. about 15 min to Nanluoguxiang by walk. Many foreign friends like here. Enjoy your trip.Good luck.
If you want traditional, small bars, local/artsy atmosphere, look for hostels or hotels near Nanluoguxiang and the Gulou area. It's known for the old-Beijing style houses of the hutongs. However, is area is very popular for Chinese and tourists alike, so its pretty busy. If you're looking for a more up-beat, bar central part of the city, stay in Sanlitun or Shuangjing. Both are close to tons of public transportation and easy to get to everything.
