If you want to get outside the city, get to Montserrat which is beautiful and sits in a gorgeous park. If you have a car or take the train, you will also enjoy the old town or Tarragona, Sitges, and Peniscola which is farther down, but quieter (especially off season) and has gorgeous beaches.

Andorra to the north isn't far and is known for tax-free shopping and in between is Girona - another region to explore if your trip allows.

If you want to see bulls, as bull fights have been outlawed in Catalonia, you can train/drive down to Valencia to see local bull runs in the small villages there. There will be bull runs in the streets of Pucol on the 4th and 11th of October this year. Here are some tips: http://10000windows.com/a-local-spanish-bull-run-2/
