Best day trips from Barcelona?

I am traveling to Barcelona in late September with my wife. Neither of us have been there before and we are looking for some ideas for some day trips. We are very big into the outdoors, being active, and being out on the water. Any suggestions?

So many options in here... These are some of my favorites all of them about around an hour/hour and a half away on train.

SitgesSmall beach town about 35 kilometres southwest of Barcelona, renowned worldwide for its Film Festival and Carnival. Located between the Garraf Massif and the sea, it is known for its beaches, nightspots, and historical sites.

MontserratBeautiful mountains with great hiking. It is well known as the site of the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat sanctuary and which is identified by some [2] with the location of the Holy Grail in Arthurian myth.

GironaGirona is a popular destination for tourists and Barcelona day-trippers - the train journey from Barcelona Sants to Girona takes just a bit over one hour. The old town stands on the steep hill of the Capuchins to the east of the river Onyar, while the more modern section stands on the plains to the west.

Another great plan is to rent a car and head to the Costa Brava which is the costal area just north of Barcelona and goes all the way to the border with France. Small beach villages with stunning rocky beaches. If you like Dali's art theres an amazing museum in Figueres also worth checking his house in Cadaques

Hi Carter,

There are some great day trips up the Costa Brava if you like water and want to be outside. Tossa De Mar is a bus ride away, Tamariu(You'll need a car) is also gorgeous as well as Begur but that's a bit farther (2.5 hours). If you want to hike you can go to Parking Milanesado which is really nice, and other day trips to browse and walk around include places like: Gerona, Tarragona, Besalu (Beautiful little town), Sitges and Castelldefels (last two are beaches).

Hi Carter,

Castelldefels has great climbing (in the photo in the back, you will have beautiful views down to the ocean). You can also Paddlesurf there, just check Vortex Surf Center for a surf session.

A lot more ideas for the outdoors can be found in my book ;-)

check my free weekend guide as an introduction:

Have a great time!
