Hi everyone,

Me and my husband with two friend of us are going to hire a car to travel from Madrid to Barcelona on June 2016. we will leave Madrid at 10 am and we have to drop the car before 5PM in Barcelona . We would like to do wine testing, trying good local food and stop by small cities on our way, would you please give us some info!

I really appreciate in advance.

Cheers from Dubai.

The drive from Madrid to Barcelona is more than 6 hours. Based on your pickup and drop off times you will not have time to stop anywhere. Between the two cities there really is not much to see if you are driving direct. For this reason it is best to take the train if you don't have time to fully explore. If you want to drive it's best to allow a couple days. Hope this helps!

Hello Rosa,

What you're proposing is quite ambitious, and to some degree, a little impractical.

The shortest route from Madrid to Barcelona is 641Km.  This route has tolls and restricted/private road usage.  Without delays, the trip will take close to six hours.  Since you've allotted yourselves only seven hours it doesn't leave you much time to explore along the way, or deviate from your intended path.

Also, it's been my experience that there are always delays.  So, you'd really be cutting it close.  You might be better served hiring the car for two days.  At least that would give you more flexibility in terms of time.

Good luck!

You have two options: go to Barcelone on an interior trip, and you can stop and visit Zaragoza on your way, or you can do the mediterranean trip (some part of the highway has a fee) and you can stop on Valencia.  Ask in any bar you are having dinner or lunch for ribera de Duero wines. I am sure everyone will love them. If not, let the waiter advise you.

Hi Rosa!

Wow, road trip from Madrid to Barcelona sounds pretty crazy to me. Most of people just take plane or train.

To enjoy wineries...I guess in the area of AragonZaragozayou might have to pass by.

But best wineries would be in El Baix PenedèsEl PrioratEl VendrellVallsall that area should be good for food and wines!

Enjoy!

Do you mean leaving Madrid at 10am and returning the car in Barcelona by 7pm plus doing all those things? Did you look at a map?

Hi. the distance between Madrid and Barcelona is 640 Km . drive will take more than 7 or 8 hours. There is a good option is to take the high speed train ( AVE ) connecting Madrid and Barcelona in just 3 hours. If you decide to drive I recommend stopping at Zaragoza , an interesting town situated halfway to 320 km from Madrid and Barcelona. Zaragoza is the hometown of the painter Goya and there is an interesting museum of his work. It is also interesting to visit the Basilica of El Pilar and the Arab palace considered the best preserved of the Almohad period after the Alhambra in Granada . I recommend to eat any bar in the area called " The Tube " excellent tapas. Near Zaragoza , about 30 km there are areas of vineyards called Carignan and Borja with excellent wines .
