The two best places to stay would probably be Sukhumvit or Khao San Road.  Khao San is going to be closer to the historic areas and is going to have lots of backpackers and nightlife/night markets.

Sukhumvit is a bit nicer/cleaner and has more shopping. seems to be the best place to get a room and usually has the best prices.

Happy travels!
