What is the best way of transportation through Bangalore for a solo traveler?
Auto-rickshaws are quaint for those visiting from overseas, but of late they have a very bad reputation even among Bangaloreans. I'd advise you to give them a skip.
If you have time on your hands, try the big red BMTC Volvo 'Vajra' buses. They're safe and comfortable.
Else, get around in cabs that you can book using the Taxi4Sure app (available for iOS, Windows and Android). They're the best bet if you're travelling late at night. The app can connect you with a cab within 30 minutes even at peak hours. Hope this helps.
Enjoy your stay in Bangalore.
It depends on your budget. The most comfortable and efficient way to get around would be to hire a taxi for blocks of 4 hours. There are any number of such taxi services available. However, if you are on a budget, then I'd suggest taking an 'Auto' - a 3-wheeler vehicle that is a cheaper alternative. It is recommended that you have someone to help you with information on all the places you want to go to. Simply getting into an auto without knowing the city and the language is not advisable. Good luck, Tristan! Bangalore is a great place and you will enjoy going around.
The auto-rickshaw is really convenient. You can insist they go by the meter (as required by the law) but make sure you track where he's going on a smartphone maps app (so they don't take you on a longer ride to rake up the fare). Or you can negotiate the fare upfront - you'll end up paying about 1.5 times the meter fare but it will save you the trouble of keeping track.
If you're willing to go through a little more trouble of waiting for buses, then the BMTC has a well-connected network, including a lot of air-conditioned buses. You should be able to look up the schedules and routes on the web, but don't expect them to be on time.
It is good to learn that Bangalore city is well connected from within. Following are the few transportation methods available currently.
1. Bus: Busses are quite connected within the city, but they get very crowded during peak hours as these are the primary mode of transport for local people plus you'll have to be familiar with the routes.
2. Auto: Auto rickshaws are readily available throughout the city but the most of the drivers deny running on meters which are calibrated with standard rates but instead demand a fare which is larger than the standard fare.
3. Car/Bike rental services: Having a car by ourselves can be a plus point for freedom of travelling and exploring the city. Drivezy Self Drive Car Rentals is one good option as they provide a wide range of vehicles to chose at a very minimal rate.
4. Mobile app based taxi services: Mobile app based taxi services is another mode preferred. Ola and Uber Office HBR provide this service across the city with rates of around Rs. 14 per km which is variable depending upon the category of the vehicle.
Mentioned in this answer:
Uber. The app works everywhere and can often be the safest, most honest, most painless and (in some cases) the most inexpensive way of getting around the city.
If not Uber, Ola.
Most other cab services are iffy. The buses are unpredictable and somehwat hard to figure out, but if you can crack em , the red airconditioned Vajra buses are pretty awesome.
Avoid autos like the plague. Especially if you are not a local.
The cheapest way is definitely the local bus service. Its called BMTC. But it maybe daunting thanks to the multiple routes, the traffic and also the crowd. If you don't mind spending a little more, use a cab service like Uber or Ola Cabs. You can use Autos but they will probably charge you extra on account of being a tourist :)
Depends on budget and destination but probably auto rickshaw is the best for transportation everywhere.
The Bus. Or use the cab services provided by Ola
In the Garden City of Bangalore, though there are a lot means of transportation but the overcrowded public transports leave the city dwellers with not many options. If you are a solo traveler who is looking for a transportation medium in the city, then my suggestion would be to go for self-drive bike and/or car rental. At present, it is best to hire a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler from a self-drive car and bike rental platform and ride around the city.
