Tim from Stockholm asked

would like to know of some off the beaten track places by the sea ?

Any recommendations of nice small places that are not touristy and easy to get to by bus. Places that are not frequented by mass tourism. Maybe possibility to overnight. Fishing villages, old Soviet style sanitoriums etc. Thanks in advance.

Not near the sea, but Sheki Khan's Palace is incredible.

How far from the city? When did you visit and how long did you spend in the country? Thx

I visited Baku a few years ago and went to see the mud volcanoes and Mesolithic cave drawings in a place called Qobustan. Not quite by the sea but a very interesting half day of wandering, once our taxis realised where we wanted to go.

The old fire temple and burning hillside in Baku is also worth visiting while in the city. When I visited in 2010 there wasn't really any site that was touristy - 5 to 6 people on average despite visiting during a peak holiday season. But not sure if things have changed.

The oil baths in Naftalan are also meant to be interesting and is part of a larger spa town that could warrant a night.

You can visit Eldorado-Merdekan and Shuvelan towns, which are fishing places and there is no tourist there. There is one Soviet style sanatorium in Merdekan. You can go to them by bus.
