I've heard multiple times that Austin is the live music capital of the world, but the last time I was there, I didn't really see much in the way of great music. I'll be visiting again next month, and I'd love to see some great local live music.
I'm not interested in a music festival or any large venues. I'm looking more for local bars or coffeehouses where I can sit back and relax while discovering some great new music. Where should I go?
Without a doubt, my absolute favorite is Saxon Pub i have never seen a bad show there. Very intimate and very local. Also love Continental Club . Ive also been hearing about Strange Brew having a lot of great bands too. Its not downtown, so i expect that would be a local experience too. And if you are forced to be on 6th street (dirty 6th to locals) then step into Friends Bar and hope that you catch The Eric Tessmer Band. You'll think you've stepped back in time to watch Stevie Ray Vaughn.
One more spot - Moontower Saloon. A drive from downtown, but it's a great spot for outdoor seating and music. My new favorite!
