House on a Lake near Austin -- suggestions?

4 dudes looking for a chill long weekend.  We'd like to find a great lake where we can rent a house and do some boating, grilling and swimming.  Ideally, we'd find a place close to Austin.  Suggestions?

Hi Jeff, the Austin lake situation can be a bit confusing at times...really the "lakes" are a series of dammed-up sections of river. That shouldn't take anything away from the experience though! They are a ton of fun to boat on. The three main "lakes" near downtown Austin are Town Lake (aka Lady Bird Lake), Lake Austin, and Lake Travis

You should avoid Town Lake for boating but it is the closest to and actually runs through downtown. I was out last weekend boating on Lake Austin and that is going to be your best bet for both great boating and proximity to downtown. Lake Travis is the largest of the three lakes but the water levels are down right now and it will put you the furthest out from downtown.

I don't know how much you are looking to spend but here is a beautiful house in a great location in Austin on AirBNB: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/2050574?guests=4&s=Ovi2

Also this is a great place to rent boats which is super close to the house link I shared: http://sunfunrental.com/

Hope this helps!

You can check Craigslist for houses near Lake Austin or Lake Travis. It's a bit tuff because of drought.  Also Canyon Lake near San Marcos area may have some places

Lake Travis is the best place if you want to hit the lake in Austin for the weekend. They've got jet ski's and boats you can rent. Book early though, they tend to go out fast. Not sure about particular places to stay around Lake Travis but Airbnb and Google should be helpful. Also take a look at HomeAway if you're trying to rent out a house near the lake.

Try to find a place on Lake Austin opposed to Lake Travis. Lake Travis is low on water right now and is way out of the way. It's absolutely beautiful out there but Lake Austin is centrally located in the case that you want to enjoy the city.

I would suggest either Lake Austin or even Lake Travis. Both are beautiful and offer opportunities for what you are looking to do. I would definitely check out sites like VRBO.com or Airbnb.com for vacation rentals for the weekend.
