Hotels and fun stuff to do in Austin?

Hello -
I used to go to Austin regularly, but it's been a while and now going with a group of girlfriends in April.  I am planning to use Hilton points, so any suggestions on the best Hilton brand hotel in the downtown area?  It would be nice to be within walking distance of great hotels and restaurants.  Mainly looking at the Hampton Inn on San Jacinto vs the Embassy Suites on South Congress, but there are a couple others not too far away.

We are hoping to catch some live music, eat good food, shop, etc.  Ten plus years ago I went shopping (artwork, furnishings) on 6th St but on the other side of town from where all the bars are on 6th St - is that still around?  Would love to hear other suggestions.  We are all young and single, but we are definitely older than 21.  Upscale might be nice but I also tend to like dives.

Any suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Cyndi,  Embassy Suites is a bit closer to Lady Bird lake (not much) & is older than the Hampton Inn.  You can't beat either one.   Uchi Restaurant is a FANTASTIC sushi restaurant owned by Tyson Cole.  It's always packed so make a reservation.  Great seafood & closer downtown is Perla's. E 6th St now is really for the younger age bar type and gets a bit creepy after a certain time where 2nd & 4th street are a bit more classy.  Apple Annies Cafe Bakery is a great healthy place for breakfast.  2ND Street District is great as well as Congress Ave (by Perla's).  Mozart's Coffee is a cool place on the lake for coffee.  You can always rent a kayak or ride a Lady Bird Lake cruise...bats should soon be out.   The east side is getting to be really up and coming with some great restaurants.  They say Franklins BBQ is the best barbecue but you have to stand in line starting at 9:00 am...Wednesdays are supposed to be best for not standing in line. These are all downtown places.  PS Make sure to stay off the cell phone when driving as Austin is a no-phone zone and YOU WILL get fined.  If you want do something Austin Centric go the Duck Tour of Austin. It depends on what you're group is wanting to do.  Girl stuff or educational. Other questions let me know.
