Fun things to do and must eats in Houston and Austin?

My parents and I are going to Houston for a wedding at the end of July. We're spending two days in Houston and two days in Austin. We are planning on renting a car.

What are some good places to eat in both cities? I'm looking for cheap to moderately priced restaurants, and we don't eat pork. Everything else is game!

In terms of things to do - historical landmarks, fun indoor/outdoor places, cool art and music venues, and anything that is unique to each city. My parents are too big on outdoor activities, so nothing too strenuous please.

In Austin, you can visit the Texas State Capitol, Zilker Park (and its spring fed swimming pool which is one of the largest spring fed pools in the country and is quite cold, nice on a hot Austin day).  LBJ Presidential Library is there and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is nearby.  Austin is full of great eateries, especially barbecue and Mexican.  In Texas barbecue means beef brisket, and there are lots of Mexican specialties that feature chicken, beef or seafood.  At sunset in summer months a bat colony takes to the skies to hunt for food.  Their main food is insects especially mosquitoes so this is a good thing: Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge Bat Flight)

Mentioned in this answer:

  1. Texas State Capitol (attraction)
  2. Zilker Park (attraction)
  3. LBJ Presidential Library (attraction)
  4. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center (attraction)
