Heading to Atlanta for the first time and we were thinking about doing some touristy things (World of Coca-cola and Underground Atlanta to name a few). What "tourist traps" are worth it, and what ones should we skip?
Unless you’re going with kids I’d say skip it especially when you’re in a place with so many great touristy things to do. I’d say see the Atlanta Botanical Garden for sure. So many amazing things grow in that part of the world and it’s one of the most unique gardens I’ve ever seen. Try to go when the magnolias are in bloom. Skip World of Coca-Cola and go to the High Museum of Art, see at show at The Fox Theatre, have a burger at The Varsity, take the CNN Studio Tour, see The Carter Center, see the Fernbank Museum of Natural History and visit the animals at the Zoo Atlanta and the fish at the Georgia Aquarium. All are much better tourist attractions than Coke World.

Stay away from Underground Atlanta. There is a 'wheel' at Centennial Olympic Park Dr NW that can show you a good overview of the city which is just a bunch of buildings if you like that kind of thing. The Sun Dial is just expensive mediocre hotel food. Atlanta has a city pass that can help you save money on venues. As for food check out West Midtown area which has some great new places to dine.

You should definitely make a stop at the Georgia Aquarium. This is one of the best in the country and has the whale sharks that make it so famous.
I would also recommend a stop in the World of Coca-Cola, it's pretty neat and can be done in a couple of hours. I would avoid anything to do with Olympic history sites, as they're all basically just dorm rooms for GT and GA State, and all the stadiums used have been converted.
The best thing you could do while in Atlanta (in my opinion) is have dinner at the Sun Dial at the top of the The Westin Peachtree Plaza. This will give you a 360 degree view of the entire city at night as it rotates ever so slowly throughout the course of your meal.
Hope this helps!

The World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium are both pretty awesome, although I think the Aquarium is pricey.
I've never enjoyed Underground Atlanta - there just isn't much to see there.
If you want to spend time walking outside, I recommend Zoo Atlanta or Piedmont Park.
Museums worth visting: Fernbank Museum of Natural History and High Museum of Art
Also, go see the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field (or at least tailgate a game) before they move to a new stadium in the burbs (boo!).
If you want to venture out of the city a bit, Stone Mountain Park offers great hiking and a fun, Southern-rific laser show at night.

Definitely skip Underground Atlanta. It's just a run-down shopping mall that happens to be underground. Half the stores are empty and the ones that are open mostly sell cheap junky souvenirs.
Best touristy thing in my mind in Atlanta is the Georgia Aquarium.
Little less touristy but still an Atlanta icon is the Vortex Bar & Grill in Little Five Points.

The World of Coca-Cola is fun and silly at a huge attraction if you're up for that. The Center for Civil and Human Rights is definitely worth a visit, and in the same plaza as Coca-Cola. If you're looking to get to know a new neighborhood and want to eat some amazing food Atlanta Food Walks : http://atlantafoodwalks.com/ is an amazing way to spend the afternoon.

If you have time, go to Chateau Elan Winery & Resort. It's about 45 minutes from Atlanta. There are restaurants, a winery tour and sometimes equestrian events.
Hi,
The world of coke and the Georgia Aquarium are both excellent. If you like sports, the all new College Football Hall of Fame is terrific. It is very interactive. The SkyView Atlanta is also fun (www.skyviewatlanta.com).
Good luck!

About an hours drive south of Atlanta is Pine Mountain Safari www.animalsafari.com. A super fun day out, I recommend renting one of their safari vans as the animals like to dis-member vehicles :)
