Where's the best place to get a souvlaki?

I'm looking for the proper authentic stuff, nothing fancy, just good old souvlaki.

Recently went to Athens and while I can't attest to it being THE best since I didn't try too many of them, it was extremely cheap, extremely local (no English menu) and wine was 4.5Eur for a 1.5Litre bottle to accompany the meal. Gyros were 1.50Eur each, with platters ranging from 3.50Eur to 5.50Eur. Basically, it's worth a try and portions were huge :)

Many places for good souvlaki in Athens. Considering you will probably want to go to the old town and walk around, this is an all time classic, conveniently located. Thanasis http://www.seriouseats.com/2009/07/o-thanasis-athens-greece-best-souvlaki-kebabs-tzatziki.html

Not anywhere touristy like the Plaka. Try the place in Varnava Square in Pagkrati. It is hidden two blocks above the ancient olympic stadium, so easy access from main parts of the city. There are also two great tavernas in that square as well.

You should get the underground and go to Σταθμός ΗΣΑΠ Μοναστηράκι (Monastiraki ISAP Station). Outside, there is the Monastiraki Square, which on one side has souvlaki places. One called Bairaktaris and one called Thanasis are the best in my opinion. :)
