Hi Nancy! Do you guys have a particular route in mind already? The most direct way from New Orleans to Memphis is through Mississippi on I-55, but it's probably not the most scenic.

My recommendation would be to drive from New Orleans to Baton Rouge along the River Road, stopping at a plantation or two along the way. (Laura Plantation and Oak Alley Plantation are two good ones, and Houmas House Plantation and Gardens has beautiful gardens and a nice restaurant on-site.) Head up to Natchez, which is a pretty town to walk around and has loads of plantations nearby. The nearby Windsor Ruins are neat to see as well. From Natchez, I'd take the Natchez Trace Pkwy as far as Port Gibson, continuing on to Vicksburg. From here, you'll take Rt. 61, the Blues Highway, north. I'm not as familiar with this area, but Clarksdale is supposed to be a good stop for both music and history.
