My wife and I want to set foot on the last continent. Can you please give me some pointers: costs, cruise ship, number of days, any problems? Those kinds of things.
Hi Michael! I travelled to the Antarctic Peninusla in 2011, departing from Ushuaia, Argentina and traveling by boat for approximately 10 days round-trip. It's expensive, but if you have time on your side, head to Ushuaia during the Antarctic summer (Nov - Mar) and shop around town for last-minute deals. We got a 2-for-1 deal on the last trip departing, and while still expensive - it was worth every penny. Our ship was the M/V Plancius (Oceanwide Expeditions), which I would thoroughly recommend. Most itineraries include a stop at Deception Island, the old British base at Port Lockroy, stopping at a research station, and possible stops at South Georgia Island and the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas). More details on our experience in Antarctica on our blog.
