It all depends on what you like to do--and the weather. If you only have a few hours, here's what I'd do: take Bus #197 (the Airport Express) to Museumplein or Leidseplein. The latter offers great people-watching at numerous cafes (although there's massive construction at the moment). From there, explore Vondelpark and/or walk up to the Stins Flower Market. Continue to the Oude Kerk Amsterdam near the Red Light District Deluxe. Wander through Zeedijk to Centraal Station , where you can catch the train back to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. If it's raining, visit one of our 52 museums. Find lots of other ideas at UnClogged in Amsterdam: An American Expat Plumbs Holland. Leave a comment if you'd like to meet me for coffee or a beer.

From Centraal Station take Trams No 1, 2, or 5 to Leidseplein Liedsplein-in summer lots of cafes, street performers. Try Reijnders a typical Dutch brown cafe.Near there the  Vondelpark is great to wander through with buskers, etc. Anne Frank House for a bit of history-note though, that till 3.30pm can only be admitted with pre-booked ticket. After  that until closure at 7pm, can buy tickets at door. A canal boat ride is a good idea on limited time as you will see a fair bit. There are hop on/off or round trip options. The old city area easily covered by foot-if time, tour Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam in Dam Square. If you don't want to walk, you can purchase 24 hour tram passes-can buy them on the trams.

Watch for bikes-they have right of way over pedestrians and the area of the pavement closest to the road is designated bicycle area-will save you an accident or being told off by bicyclists1

Hi, I dont know how much time you will be there , but if I would have little time I would take a cup of coffee at Cafe Luxembourg or Hoppe .- I would take a picture at the Anne Frank House and go to the Rembrandt Square Hotel

If you only have a few hours then you want to pick your schedule very carefully.  How long is your layover?  The train between Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Amsterdam Centraal  takes about 25-30 minutes each way, so don't forget to factor that in, plus the time it takes to clear security when you return to the airport.  You also don't want to stray too far away from Centraal Station once you get to the city.  If your flight arrives at 06:00 then it'll probably be around 07:00-07:30 when you arrive at Centraal Station.

If you only have a few hours then I wouldn't recommend the Rijksmuseum.  It's huge and you need at least half a day to do it justice.  A smaller museum such as Anne Frank House or Van Gogh Museum or a 2-3 hour canal boat or bike tour might be a better choice.  Yellow Bike has great tours and that's a great way to stretch your legs after a long flight.  You could do a cheese tasting at Reypenaer Tasting Room or have traditional Dutch food (which is surprisingly hard to find) at Restaurant Greetje
