i am travelling to amsterdam this fortnight and iv been there before few times as well.and i just have the weekend to myself before i come back to India.so i was wondering which of the places should i visit to make the most of my weekend.in desperate need of suggestions on which european country/place is a stone's throw away or a weekend itenary to get away from amsterdam.HELP!
You have Germany and Belgium as neighbours. Germany to the east, the city of Düsseldorf is not far away and Belgium towards the south, with Antwerpen and Brussels also not far away.
belgium or germany, but whats wrong wth the 'dam?
Belgium is the very close to Amsterdam. You could visit Antwerp, 130 Km (85 miles), Bruges and Brussell, about 175 Km away. Consider taking an organized tour to facilitate visiting all 3 places or at least Brussell and Bruges (beautiful and historic cities).
However, there is so much to see and things to do in Amsterdam. No matter how long you were there I am sure there are still many things you have not seen or experienced in Amsterdam and sorrounding areas. There is also Rotterdam in the Neatherlands worth seeing.
Amsterdam is a great place to be, and a great place to use as a springboard for locations nearby.
You mentioned that you've been to Amsterdam before. What about the rest of the Netherlands? How much of the rest of the country have you seen? Many people go to Amsterdam and think they've seen the whole country. I'm guilty of that myself.
About a half hour by rail from Amsterdam is the town of Haarlem. When I go to Amsterdam I usually stay there. It's a little smaller, a little slower, and a little quieter than Amsterdam. It's worth a visit in its own right. Further west is the seaside resort town of Zandvoort. It will still be early in the season, should you decide to go. So, it wouldn't be too crowded. In fact, most of the Netherlands is served by train. That opens up the entire, beautiful, countryside to you.
Beyond the Netherlands, the next logical destination would be Belgium. The capital city of Brussels is only about 2 hours away. It has a number of fine museums (the musical instrument museum is my favorite), several beautiful parks and gardens, and large green spaces north and south of the city, both of which are accessible by public transportation. Rue de Bouchers is the cities famous restaurant row, where the headwaiters greet you and extoll the virtues of their various establishments. It isn't as heavy handed as it sounds, and in fact can be part of the fun. If that doesn't appeal to you, the pomme frites, waffles and chocolates should!
Another wonderful destination in Belgium is Brugge. A Unesco world heritage site, Brugge has retained all its medieval charm while offering several top notch museums. The Groeningemuseum has a wonderful collection of Dutch renaissance art. The Markt square alone is worth the trip.
Finally, there is no reason you weekend trip has to be next door. Since you're in Amsterdam, Schiphol airport opens up the entire continent to you. Depending on your budget, one of Europe's many discount airlines may be able to take you to a destination for far less than you think. For example, there are several flight from Amsterdam to London for less than 50 Euros, each way. You may find this link useful. Not only does it have a great deal of information, but it has direct links to each airline.
Hi, from Amsterdam you can also reach Antwerp@ by train. Only 1.5 hour. I do not like Brussels. Antwerp is cute with nice antique shops and good food, check this website: http://www.yourlittleblackbook.me/cityguide/antwerp/

You could go to Belgium. I personnally love Brugge.
Luckily Amsterdam has a few high speed rail lines leading from it so you have many options of where you could get to within a couple of hours.
If you were hoping for a city in another country to spend your time in, here are a few options to consider:
There are also some charming smaller cities within the Netherlands to see too. If you were hoping for a more relaxing weekend one of these might be a good option for you:
