Amsterdam

I am spending two and a half (mid-August) days in Amsterdam..

...what are some cost-saving Amsterdam tips? especially with activities, food and even accommodation. I am travelling solo and I am interested in the major touristy stuff. Its such a beautiful but expensive city.

Take the train from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Centraal Station, Amsterdam and it is VERY walkable to nice safe affordable hotels and Hostels (if you dare). Stay on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal street or area. because its close to inexpensive food and Central Station. Walking distance to Museums, Music or rent a bike. Many great Palm Frits(French Fry) places and for cheap food (for all the coffee shop users) that fills you up. Follow that same street to the Museumplein by foot or tram(approx 2 euros). Walk around to look at architecture even take a canal ride in the boats...Safe Fun City!

HEMA is a cheap deparment story with reasonably priced food. Very good for souvenirs.

Take a walk along the Grachtengordel-West (water) and marvel at the old houses there.
