Hotel & attractions for family with 11 year old kid

Any recommendations for a good not tooo expensive hotel near the center of Amsterdam. Long weekend. Location is far more important than luxury. Any special attractions for kids (girl 11 years). Thank you.

Don't have any hotel recommendations I'm afraid, but I can suggest a couple of attractions, as I was about 12 when I went to Amsterdam. (So admittedly some years ago, but lots of the big attractions have stayed the same.)

I would definitely suggest going to Anne Frank House. It's harrowing, but it's incredibly moving, and really brings the history home. It's also really interesting to visit with a teenage (or just pre-teenage) girl, as it makes it easy for them to identify with what Anne Frank went through.

It would also be lovely to walk or cycle along the many canals (cheap, too!), and just soak up the city that way, or you can do a boat tour along them.

The Bloemenmarkt (flower market) is also a must do, and you get to see all of the tulips - though beware of how expensive they can be! If she's into art, the Van Gogh Museum is also great.

So don't worry - there's plenty to do in Amsterdam besides Stag Parties and dirty weekends! And it's such a beautiful place to explore. As a young girl, I remember absolutely loving it.

Hope you have an amazing trip!

K :-)

I'd recommend staying in the Eastern part of the city because there are 3 nice attractions for kids in that area:

Science Center NEMO: Science museum with lots of fun things to do for kids

Natura Artis Magistra: the Zoo

Tropenmuseum: anthropological museum

Hotels I'd recommend in Amsterdam East would be:

■ Hotel Casa 400 - a bit of a business hotel but good value for money

■ Stayokay Amsterdam Zeeburg - This is a cheap hostel for young travellers but they also have family rooms

Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre - expensive but located near Central Station

3 thanks
