The Athenaeum is a great stop. You can browse for hours, people watch, and the magazine section is killer. There is also an American bookstore Spui 12. Have a coffee and a piece of carrot cake at Caffe Esprit next door, or a beer at the Hoppe across the street. Also, there is an English bookstore in the JordaanLauriergracht 71. Nearby that store is a great Italian restaurant - Toscanini

Depends on what type of bookstore you are looking for ;) There is a very nice bookstore for photography called Mendo, otherwise The American Book Center has almost everything you might need!
