Best place to stay on the Amalfi Coast in October?

We're a couple travelling to the Amalfi Coast in October for four days. We plan to stay in one place and then travel around. Is the coast still crowded during this time of the year? Will the weather be too cold to enjoy the beaches? Is it better to stay in one of the bigger cities, like Amalfi or Positano, if these won't be too crowded in October? Or is it better to go for smaller places like Atrani or Praiano? We're looking for something close to the sea, high on romance and great views.

Hi sue, I went last year in october, the weather was perfectly fine. It is warm/sunny at the same time has cool breeze. You can get still get to see the beautiful color of the waters from atop.crowd will mostly be on the base of the coast.. but when you drive up , the crowd gets spread. It's one of my favorite places I have been to so far.happy travels and don't forget to try amalfi s gelatin. Regards, The satori saga

October is a nice time to go to the Amalfi Coast. The crowds have decreased, the water is still warm and it is a bit more relaxed. I would definitely recommend staying in Positano. It is very romantic, on the sea and picturesque.

I would recommend the following places:

1. Casa Celeste --beautiful bed and breakfast. It is close to town and beach. The rooms are gorgeous, the coffee and home made marmalades are amazing and the views from the terraces are out of this world

2. If you want a hotel on the beach Hotel Buca di Bacco is spectacular.

Hope this helps a bit!

Sorrento. Lovely location, easy transportation links to the Amalfi Coast, Naplesand Pompei. More likely you'll find a good off-season deal there. See Rick Steves' Italy book for more ideas.

I don't know your budget and we last stayed there 10 years ago but we loved Hotel Santa Caterina just outside of the town of Amalfi Lunches and dinners were wonderful there and we stayed in a very romantic room in the middle of lemon trees.  We found Il San Pietro di Positano Hotel just outside of Positano to be a beautiful hotel but stuffier.  Friends have stayed at Le Sirenuse Hotel in Positano and loved it.  October should be a good time without the crowds.
