Best place to visit in Adirondack?

On our way to Maine, My wife and I are planning to camp for a couple of days in Adirondack National Park.  With it being so big and us being there only a couple of days, what would be the best place to camp and sights to see? Hiking? Views? Kayaking?

We would like to set up camp right on the water somewhere that is no too crowded with other campers.

Thanks!

The area around Lake Placid is one of my favorite spots in the world. We used to camp near there when I was a kid--there are a million different places to hiking, kayaking, etc., etc. There are a tons of different camping/lodging options--here's their site so you can have a look: http://www.lakeplacid.com/camping

Indian Lake is a great place to camp.  You can camp near the shore or on one of several islands.  It is near some great hiking spots ... such as Snowy Mountain.

New York State has the best campground system anywhere! In the Adirondack Park it is administered by the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation. Many of these campgrounds have a large number of sites right on the water. Reservations can be made through ReserveAmerica.  http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8299.html
