About Me

I went on my first overseas trip when I was 18 and I've been addicted to travel ever since.  I've done budget backpacking, organized bus tours, luxury all-inclusive holidays and everything in between.  My preference is solo budget backpacking.

I've travelled through around 60 countries on 5 continents.  Born in Canada, I've also lived and worked in England, Scotland and Australia and studied in Thailand.

AEaster Island: How to get to Easter Island and what to see

I just booked a LAN flight from Santiago to Hanga Roa a couple of weeks ago.   It will cost you about $600 return for the 5-hour trip.  As has been mentioned, it's one of the most isolated places on earth, which can make it... See More

AMadison: What are the best professional eateries with healthy choices?

I assume you mean Madison, WI?  Whenever I'm there on business trips, we always end up at the Prime Quarter Steak House for dinner.  It's a bit on the casual side, so it might not be what you're after for regular business meals.  Definitely... See More

AZanzibar: Where is the best area of Zanzibar to stay?

Sorry, I can't remember the name of the resort I stayed at, but I spent most of my time on Zanzibar at Kendwa Beach on the west coast.  Beautiful white sand beach with some absolutely gorgeous sunsets. Mnemba Island on the... See More

AThailand: Thailand in May - worth it?

I was in Southeast Asia for three months at that time of year (late March until early June).  It can be very humid.  It usually only rained in the afternoon or at night and only for a short time.  It was almost always cloudy though.  There were only... See More

AKoh Samui: Any tips for a single traveler?

I also recommend Khao San Road for your time in Bangkok.  There are plenty of guesthouses and inexpensive hotels in the area.  If you want to meet other travellers that's the place to do it. Be sure to visit the Grand Palace... See More

AVancouver: Family Weekend Ideas Please

I highly recommend the Vancouver Aquarium.  I'll warn you up front, it's not cheap, but it's a great way to spend a day.  The kids would love it.  It's located in Stanley Park which has walking trails, nice beaches... See More

ACape Town: Where to spend 3-5 days after Cape Town and a safari?

Have you looked at Swellendam ?  There are some nice hikes in the area, or you can take a day trip from there down to Cape Agulhas (southernmost point of Africa). Oudtshoorn  is another option.  There's... See More

QSantiago: 2-3 days in Santiago. What shouldn't I miss?

I'm stopping off for a couple of days in Santiago, Chile on my way to Easter Island.  I'll be there in early September, travelling solo.  What should I see/do while I'm in Santiago?  I like to get a feel for the culture of a place.  Museums, self-guided... See More
