Need a Reasonable Itinerary

I'm thinking of 10 days total, but would like to visit St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. Am I over-reaching? I'd love any and all advice. For example, how many days per island.

Thanks in advance!

looking tips from the locals...

My Husband and I may be moving to STT in a few months for my husband's work. Just wondering, if anyone from the US who moved to STT, could pass along any info about adjusting from living (recently) in Myrtle Beach SC and Williamsburg VA to STT. I've been reading a lot online and thought it may be nice to start making new friends before we move! :) Thanks! I appreciate all input!

Are USVI-BVI accommodation prices really so "crazy" ?  (2 Answers)

I was planning to visit both USVI and BVI with my wife, over a couple weeks, coming in from nearby Dominican Republic (there's a nice, new direct flight from "La Romana" to "St. Thomas").
Now that I finished looking at published Hotel prices, though, I think we'd better bind the whole idea: a hotel room for two seems to cost - on average - well over 100 EUR a night, even at so-called "cheap" places, including B&Bs !!! Is it REALLY that bad ? Or maybe once we get there, once can find out reasonably priced places (i.e. where 2 can sleep decently at below the 100 EUR a-night reasonability limit) ?? Thanks, Marcus

First REAL Vacation  (3 Answers)

I am anticipating my first vacation and I would like to visit an Island. You will be travelling April 5th to the 12 of the upcoming year. I have some requirements to meet and I am unsure of which island to choose.
Must Haves...
1) I do not have a US Drivers License and will be traveling alone. I would like for the island to be small enough to be able to adventure on foot or rent a moped (such as Bermuda)
2) I am a hobbyist photographer specializing in macro photo such as butterflies and flowers. This is not a party vacation but more of a relax and adventure by means of photography. Thus the location of botanical gardens and such would be nice have nearby.
3) I am a former Chef and would like some fine dining establishments.

I have done some research my self, but would like some advice from experienced island hoppers. Is expedia a smart choice for flight and hotel, should I got to a travel agent or would you be able to suggest how to book? I do not have a valid passport but will get one soon if I decide I am vacationing outside of the US.

I value your advice because you have lived the experience.
Thanks, Jonathan

Looking For Ideas for 4th Trip to St. John  (1 Answer)

In the upcoming weeks, I will be taking my fourth trip to St. John in six years. If you've seen my Virgin Islands travel page, you'll notice that I have done most of the highlights on previous trips. This time around I am hoping my fellow travelers can provide some good ideas on what else I should do on this next trip.

To summarize what I have done on previous visits, I have visited and snorkeled at Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay, Jumbie Bay, Maho Bay, Leinster Bay, Salt Pond and Kiddle Bay. I have kayaked from Cinnamon Bay to Whistling Cay. I have gone scuba diving in the area. I have taken day sails to Jost Van Dyke. I have experienced the nightlife in Coral Bay.

What am I missing? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Probable last minute USVI Trip - Might need advice!!  (2 Answers)

Hello all,

We are a couple in the mid 20's and are on vacation next week. We found a pretty sweet airline promotion that brings us from Canada to St.Thomas, for 1 week (7 nights) beginning april).

We do not know anything about USVI and have never never visited the Caribbean area, except for all-inclusive (hotel+beach) packages in Punta Cana and Dominican Republic, which isn't really visiting.

I have been doing a lot of research and I am not sure if I am more educated, or more confused.

Firstly, I was looking for accomodation on St.Thomas and St.Thomas only, found a few interesting things, thought the island was pretty cool, very pretty and full of stuff to do for 8 days/7 nights.

Then I started reading about St.John and googled it for pictures and activities, and it just seemed like paradise.

So all of this got me a little confused, I'll tell you guys a little bit about us, and then if you could help us figure out how to plan this out!

1. We are in our mid-20's, we enjoy a good city-life/nightlife but in travelling we enjoy more nice places, nice beachs, views, activities. We will not go clubbing or stuff like that but we enjoy having a few drinks at the pub and having fun there!

2. We have been to Hawaii and realized we loved snorkelling. The islands we enjoyed the most were the more laid back ones, the ones with simply the breathtaking views/beachs. We also enjoy hiking, but not hiking just to hike/walk, more like hiking to somewhere in order to see something special (view/waterfall/remote beach, etc). We got a little bored on Kauai in Hawaii since it was too relax at night (we stayed in a remote place) but we still enjoyed it a lot, that aspect of Kauai didn't make us think less of Kauai!

Now what we would like to know :

1. Should we go to St Thomas and St John, if so, knowing we are there for 8 days/7 nights, what would be the best ratio of days on each?! We are capable of fulling up our days and getting up early, but we also want to relax and not rush things. We'd like a 'natural' schedual, go with the flow, no rush, no stress, but always active... So how should we split the days on the 2 islands?

2. Renting a car? It seems the islands are pretty small, I first thought we had to rent a car, but it seems like we don't. We are okay with hitchhiking but are not a big fan of it ! (I guess it can be unpredictable sometimes)

3. Accomodation : Like everybody we are on a budget, I have looked threw dozens of hotels and VRBO studios/condos, and have found quite a few that seem pretty good! My question here : Where to book tho on the islands? What cities would be the best for us, what areas north/east/west/south. On St Thomas it seems like it would be to the south/east of the island, They are an awful lot of condos to rent there, is that the easiest/best place on the island to be? We'd like to see every possible beach so we are aware we will move a lot! We'd like to be well situated. What about St John? Where to stay?!

If we go threw with the booking, we will be leaving within the next week, I know my thread is long, but if anyone could give us a few advices, it would help us out!

Thank you,
Pyj

Beaches of St. John  (9 Answers)

This might sound silly but here goes: I'm planning a summer getaway next year to an outstanding white sand beach and I chanced upon photos and videos of St. John, particularly Trunk Bay, Hawksnest Bay and Honeymoon Beach. Are they really as beautiful as depicted in photos and videos? For those who traveled extensively in the Caribbean, would you say that these beaches are among the very best?

Thank you. :)

St. Thomas Clubs?

Hi,

I am blessed enough to be able to plan 2-3 trips to different parts of the world each year, and I planned my spring break on St. Thomas island. My friend will be hosting me at his house (he is a sushi chef). Are there any real clubs on St. Thomas or the Virgin Islands? We are also going to take a seaplane to San Juan where I am sure I can find some fun.

Cheers!

Caneel Bay or Westin St. John?  (2 Answers)

Hi --- I'm taking my mom and grandma to St. Thomas/St. John for their Mother's Day gift this year, and I'm looking for some advice on a hotel. The 2 that I'm leaning towards are Caneel Bay and the Westin St.John. Both are in the same price range and have received very positive reviews from the research I've done. Has anyone stayed at either? Or have any other suggestions for a nice hotel for a girls vacation? We would be most interested in someplace that has a nice spa, clean and safe beach (direct access or within walking distance) and good restaurants (on-site or close by).

Thanks in advance!
Valerie

st. thomas coki beach  (3 Answers)

On my last cruise in November, I hailed a taxi at the cruise terminal (shared)to go to Coki Beach. The driver wound up taking us to Sapphire Beach because he said that Coki was too rough. Since the cruise, I've heard that this may be a common ploy to get folks to Sapphire Bay. Has anyone else had this happen? Forewarned is forearmed and I won't let them get away with it next time if it's a local scam. Please let me know if this has happened to you.

Weather in late September?  (4 Answers)

We are visiting St. John, to snorkel and be beach bums, drive around the island, drink rum in the sun, etc etc, the week of Sept 20 -27. Does any one have any ideas about what the weather will be like, other than the threat of a hurricane? Any ideas about insects and jellyfish? Have any of you stayed there that time of year? Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Cattail

Caribbean cruise ships  (2 Answers)

These seem boring to us. They stop at the same main port at every island and we see the same dumpy towns and T shirt shops at every stop. Has anyone done any interesting cruising on a private yacht that stops at all the neat places the cruise ships do not? We are considering a private sailing catamaran for adventure and fun and would love to hear from anyone that has also done this.

Getting on Magan's Bay St Thomas in June at 9:30am. What do we do afterwards?

We are getting married on Magan's Bay at 9:30am. What are some good things to do afterwards? Pictures may take an hour or so. I can't find any place for "BRUNCH" on a weekday. Suggestions? Or should we all do dinner and dancing at a restaurant/bar that night?

Looking to see if a certain butterfly art shop still exists in Charlotte Amalie or near Blue Beards  (1 Answer)

Back in 1979, I visited and was absolutely astounded by a shop that had large encased glass framed pieces of art, filled with radiant butterflies, that appeared to have been stirred up, and/or were flying in a sort of order, up and swirling, and just so beautiful. I want to purchase one of these for my wife, who is going through her third bout with breast cancer....butterflies to her have connective meaning, and I am away from her as she goes through this battle, because of my job. The butterflies are a true glimer of hope for her. Does anyone know if the particular shop still exists, and the name of the shop? thank you, Dave

I am looking to price a EOS Digital Canon, Maybe the (5D) does anyone know if they carry this item in any of the shops? Any information would be apprecitated.

Thank You,

Rental car dilemma

Hi!! My husband and I are going to the Virgin Islands for 10 days in July.

*2 nights in St. Thomas
*4 nights in Tortola
*4 nights in St. John

We want to rent a car on each island. We also will be taking day trips to other BVI while on Tortola. Do we rent cars on these islands too??? What is the best way to do this? We will fly into STT airport, but other than that, should we try to rent from the ferry docks? I just can't seem to get my brain around all these car rentals. Thanks for your help! :-)

Virgin Islands questions!!  (4 Answers)

Hi! My husband and I are planning a trip to the Virgin Islands in June/July 2008. We are flying to St. Thomas and plan to spend a couple of days and then on to Tortola for a week. What do you think of this plan?

Day 1 - fly to St. Thomas; explore
Day 2 - ferry to St. John; explore St. John for the day
Day 3 - explore St. Thomas; ferry to Tortola
Day 4 - explore Tortola
Day 5 - ferry to Virgin Gorda
Day 6 - ferry to Jost Van Dyke
Day 7 - explore Tortola
Day 8 - ferry to Peter Island
Day 9 - ferry back to St. Thomas; fly home

Here are some questions:

*Has anyone stayed at Pavilions and Pools on St. Thomas?

*Has anyone stayed at the Long Bay Beach resort on Tortola?

*Should we rent a car the entire time, or just rent one for a day on each island that we visit?

Thanks so much for answering my many, many questions. I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

:-)

time to red hook?

Arriving at STT at 4:00 p.m.-- too late, probably, to make the Tortola ferry from CA. But will there be enough time to make the 5 or 5:30 ferries from Red Hook to either West End or Road Town?

Looking for help with finding seasonal housing this summer

Hi there,

I have been on the phone with a friend about a job on St. John's this summer. I am trying to find information on places to stay. I have great housesitting/caretaking experience from helping friends who own a summer resort in COlorado.

What I am wondering is what is the likelyhood of finding reasonable housing? Are there places that specialize in seasonal housing? Any word of mouth Inns or good hostels?

I've been checking omline and so far have only found vacation/ semi-permanant listings.. I know housing is hard to find but where do all the restaurant employees live?

Thanks for the help and say hi to the beach for me!

Also should I rent reserve a vehicle in St thomas or are they readily available?

Moving to St Thomas  (3 Answers)

Hello! I am moving to St. Thomas in August to attend The University of the Virgin Islands. Since I am a graduate student, MBA, I cannot live on campus. Does anyone have any suggestions to where I should rent, prices, finding a roommate or roommates, etc. I have only been to St. Thomas once for the day while on a cruise, so needless to say I have no clue. Is this a good place to live? Isn't it easy to get to St. John's and the British Virgin Islands? I would very much appriciate any advice anyone can offer. Thank you so much for your time!!! :)
