TdP - 4 days with rental car

Can someone help me to draft a plan to see the park in a meaningful way mainly using a car and knowing that
a) I will arrive in Puerto Natales on the 14th Sep (evening)
b) I have 4 days of time to go around the park (one of these days I might cruise to Balmaceda/Serrano, if worth)
c) I need to go back to Punta Arenas on the 19th
?
Thank you very much in advance for your wise advice.
Maurizio

W trek in early April  (2 Answers)

I’m planning to do W trek for 5 days by myself in the first week of April. It seems very expensive to join the travel agency even without a guide. Is it not safe to do trekking alone in April? I am a female and have had some hiking experience but not expert. Any comment would be appreciated.

Renting Sleeping bags  (1 Answer)

We will be hiking the W in late February and are debating 3 sleeping bag options. Rent from the refugios and not have to carry the bag, maybe take a liner. Question here is are they clean and warm enough? Rent from Erratic Rock, again are they clean? Take our own bags and then have to also carry them all over Argentina.

Schedule for return bus to Puerto Natales  (1 Answer)

I'm planning a trip in one or two days from Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine. I need to be back in Puerto Natales at 18:00 day two. What are my options? I know that buses TO Torres del Paine departs once in the morning and once in the afternoon, but when do they go back? Do I need to book my ticket in advance to make sure I can take the bus?

Guided 2 day tour in Torres del Paine from Puerto Natales?  (2 Answers)

I will have two days in Puerto Natales and will definitely go to Torres del Paine national park at least one day.

I know there are a lot of guided tours for one day. But are there any recomended guided tours for two days, without camping and instead staying the night at som hotel och hostel close to the park? I will not be able to carry all my belongings all the time, som two days of hiking by myself is not an option.

And then get back to Puerto Natales on day two.

2 days in Torres del Paine  (1 Answer)

Hello, I'm planning a trip to Torres del Paine for 2 days at the end of November. Essentially I am planning on leaving Puerto Natales on Thursday morning and returning Friday night to possibly catch a bus to Punta Arenas. Ideally, I would like to camp one night (Thursday night) on the site and see the highlights of the W trek (perhaps 1st or 2nd leg only). Do you know of any shuttle in the park taking hikers from one point to the other? Any recommendation as to what needs to be seen in such a short amount of time?

Guided tour or go by myself?  (3 Answers)

I'm planning a day tour to Torres del Paine from Puerto Natales.

What kind of guided tours do they offer in the park? Is it worth it? Are there any mini bus tour in the park if you don´t want to trekk all day?

I'm not used to go trekking and it could be nice to have someone lead the way to the best parts, not not too far away because I'm going back to Puerto Natales in the afternoon.

hiking in Torres del Paine and luggage  (2 Answers)

Hello, I was wondering what you would recommend in terms of luggage at Torres del Paine. I planned a trip from Central Chile to the South and I am using a rental car most of the time, which also makes it easy to store my stuff. At Torres del Paine I wanted to do the 3-4 day hiking circuit. Is there a way to store my duffel bag since I won't have my rental car there (and then just take a small backpack with me)? Or would I need to carry all my belonging while doing this?
Thank you!

Peppas

What must-see hiking is well marked and good for a self-guided trip  (6 Answers)

We are visiting Torres Del Paine in late December 2015 - we are a family of three all nature lovers, hikers and campers.
My husband cannot carry a backpack right now, so we are basing ourselves from Las Torres Hotel and want to hike and see the most beautiful spots in the area.

I think we need a car since we are not buying all-inclusive, and we need some local input about how far hiking trails are and how well marked they are. We can do some excursions with the hotel, but we don't want to be on the schedule and pay all the extra. We have travelled to many and stayed in many US National parks - this is our first trip to Patagonia.

We'd love feedback from anyone who has travelled this way. Ideally we would do the W circuit, but we want to sleep inside on a bed this trip because we are travelling to far to get there (we live in USA - CAlifornia).

THanks for any ideas about what we should see and what is easy to see on your own vs what might be worth doing with a guide. Also reality check on car for getting around and gas situation.

THank you!

Full day tour to Torres del Paine from El Calfate  (3 Answers)

Im looking for just a day Tour from El Calfate, Argentina to Torres del Paine, Chile on either April 5th or 6th. I only have 2 and half days here because one of the days Im doing an Ice trek on the glaciers on either the first or second day depending on whats available for Torres del Paine. The next day we are heading north to El Chalten to go camping and hiking for 3 days. This is why I'm looking for just a day trip on these days. Any recommendations on certain tours or where I can find these day trips available? Should I book them now or wait until I get to my hotel?

Thanks

Trisha

Suggestions for 3 days and 2 nights in TdP?  (2 Answers)

Hi,

Me an my friend will be travelling to Torres del Paine in December, and will be staying 2 nights + 3 days in the park.

This is our first time in TdP, and we find it a bit tricky to come up with a suitable route for such a short time. We both like hiking, but are not super sporty. And we prefer to stay in the refugios, and not to camp.

We'd be really grateful if somebody could suggest a suitable itinerary for such a short stay!

Las Torres Sendero del Ascencio - Towers of Paine  (6 Answers)

Hi Everyone,
I will be staying at Hotel Las Torres Patagonia, mid November, and would like to take the day tour called "Las Torres Sendero del Ascencio". It is the hike to the base of the Towers. I am a little worried about the difficulty of the hike. Does anyone have any experience with this hike and how hard would you rate it?
Thank you.

All Inclusive... or not?  (5 Answers)

Hi! We're planning a trip to Torrel Del Paine at the end of November. Below is the availability I've found at places we'd like to stay.

- Explora Patagonia (Nov 23-27, which aren't our original dates but we can make it work. $4,560 per person)
- Patagonia Camp (Nov 26-30 and have option of all inclusive or not. Not is $850 per person, with all inclusive is $2,040 per person)
-Tierra Patagonia (Nov 26-30, $3000 per person)

All inclusive is clearly a much more expensive option... do you think all inclusive is worth it? (I'm not sure we'll want to do activities non-stop and also I'm vegetarian- so not sure I'll be taking advantage so much of the food).

Seems like the only option that isn't all inclusive is Patagonia Camp.

Can you please let me know your thoughts on these options and if there are others I should look into? We're looking for something relatively luxurious as it's an anniversary trip, so no hostels etc.

Thanks!

Bus from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales and back  (4 Answers)

Hi,

My wife and I are traveling to Patagonia in Dec & Jan. We have pretty much everything booked except bus tickets from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales (round trip).

What is the best way to purchase these bus tickets?

I tried to purchase in advance, and got in contact with a company called "Austral Glacier". They claim to organize everything for you, without any fees (hotels, bus tickets, etc). They want me to wire cash into their bank account, and naturally that is a red flag for me. I've never had to do this before.

I guess my question is, is it necessary to book these bus tickets in advance? I arrive in Punta Arenas at 7pm the night before I need to take a bus to Puerto Natales...I assume I can just purchase a ticket on the spot no problem?

Thanks!

Adam

Food at Refugios - what to expect?  (1 Answer)

Another rookie question (sorry!)

My wife and I (mainly my wife, I'll eat anything) were wondering what kind of food we should expect at the refugios in TDP? Read mixed reviews, some people say it's junk food (somebody ordered chips and guacamole, and got doritos as "chips"), others say its like cafeteria food, etc.

In other words...what is your typical breakfast, lunch, and dinner meal package?

Can you purchase produce (apples, bananas, etc) at the shops, or do they offer them at all?

We just want to make sure it's at least somewhat substantial and semi-healthy to fuel the long hikes.

Thanks much!

Adam

Hiking from Los Cuernos to Paine Grande (via Valle Frances) in 1 day?  (4 Answers)

Is it possible (in only one day) to hike starting at Los Cuernos, then past Campamento Italiano, all the way to Campamento Britanico (i.e. the valle frances trail), and then all the way to Refugio Paine Grande to sleep?

My wife and I are trying to do the W trail, and stay at Refugios every night for the food and shelter. I've read that most people spend the night at Campamento Italiano. Problem is, I was not planning on bringing a tent, stove, etc. It is always an option, but I was hoping to cut down on the weight of my bag.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!

Refugios for the W circuit - booking?  (4 Answers)

What is the best way to book the refugios along the W circuit? For example I wanted to stay at Las Torres, Los Cuernos, Paine Grande, and Refugio Grey. I see there are two agencies (Fantastico and Vertice).

How many months in advance should I book? I am beginning my trip on January 1, 2015.

Any help or recommendations is appreciated!

Thanks,

Adam

Solo "W" in late June?  (3 Answers)

Hello!

I was hoping to hike the W at some point over the next few weeks and as of now don't have anyone to hike it with. Do you think I'll be okay hiking/camping alone? I have the appropriate clothing and will rent sleeping bag/tent in Puerto Natales.

On a similar note, it sounds like car/bus transfer from Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine is difficult to find at this time of year. Are you familiar with what my options might be? Would it be possible to hire a taxi rather than rent a car?

Thank you so much for any help/suggestions. As of now I think I may go down to Puerto Natales (fly Santiago -> Punta Arenas) and try to figure out more there. Perhaps I may also find someone else to trek with.

Trekking the W route in late April  (2 Answers)

Hi,
I am a solo traveller looking to trek the W route from 24-28th April and wanted to ask if it is best to book refugios in advance? Many of them seem to have finished for the season (or floes on the 30April) and it's hard to see what I will need to book. Do you think it is possible to book everything in Puerto Natales? Or is it better to book some in advance and risk only a few? I am happy to camp if that is the only option but would prefer a basic bed if possible.

Also this is at the beginning of a three moth trip and I will have a very large travel ruck sack. Is there somewhere where you can store bags before entering the park?

Help and tips much appreciated especially from anyone who has done this trip solo.
Thanks! Vicky

Accesibility  (3 Answers)

Hi
We are going to spend 3-4 Easter days in TDP (18 - 20/21 April). Is it possible to see best places (glacier, Torres etc. ) without long hiking (driving a car), in such short time. We would like to stay in the Puerto Natales, rent a car and jump to the Park every day. Does it make sense?

Glacier Grey Ice Hike - timing?  (1 Answer)

Hello,

I am planning on doing the ice hike on Glacier Grey at the beginning of April. I will be staying at Mountain Lodge Grey the night before and will leave for the hike from there. I am wondering what the typical timing of the hike is? I hope to do the hike and then trek down to Paine Grande to spend the night there. Is it possible to do the ice hike and then trek down to Paine Grande all in one day?

The next day I will take the boat across lake Pehoe to Pudeto and then a bus to exit the park.

Thank you!
Elizabeth

How to get from Refugio Grey to Punta Arenas?  (1 Answer)

Hello,

I am going to be in Torres Del Paine at the very beginning of April. How do I get from Refugio Grey to Punta Arenas using busses and how long should it take? Would I have to take a Ferry down Lago Grey first? I have an entire day to get there, my flight out of Arenas is at 1:50PM the next day.

Thank you!

From Refugio Chileno to Lodge Paine Grand  (1 Answer)

Hello!
I am very happy I can visit Torres del Paine again!

Now I have a question:

I need to go to "Lodge Paine Grand" from "Refugio Chileno" in one day,
and I do not want to get there by hiking, it is a too long way for me.
Any other option?
Is that possible to get there by bus and boat?

Thanks so much in advance~~~

Laptops while hiking the ¨W¨ and O trails  (2 Answers)

Hi,

A friend of mine is moving to Patagonia for a few months but is hiking in Torres right when she gets there...She is wondering if there is a place at the start of the W and O hikes where you can keep laptops or other valuables while hiking. Any lockers or places like that at the start of the hike? Or is it common for backbackers to just take everything with them on their backs? Thanks!
