Is it safe to drive between Johannesburg airport and Sun City in a rental car?
I drive this route on business every couple of weeks, and it's fine. However, Gerald is right that you should drive this in daylight as there are a lot of pedestrians and livestock around the villages en route. In case you haven't visited before, the days here are pretty short as we are close to Tropic of Capricorn, so it gets light about 0530 and is dark by 1900.
I would however caution that this route is considered as an 'income generation' opportunity by the provincial authorities, and they routinely speed trap along the last section of the road. So be particularly mindful of the posted speed limits - the general speed limit in South Africa is 120kph, but around villages and road junctions, the speed limit is reduced to 60kph or 80kph, often over a prlonged section of road.
We're delighted to have your contibution to GDP as a visitor, but it would be a pity to donate any more to the traffic department!
We (American family of three) did the Jo'burg-Sun City -Jo'burg round trip by rental car last year and had no problems. Just do it in daylihgt, as mentioned earlier, due to pederstrians and livestock along the road.
