Can anybody advise what there is to do in Sortavala ?
I'm aware of boat trips to Valaam, but what else is there to do or see ????
It depends if you have a possibility to wander around. Your friends have a car? These are some hightlights.
- Kuhavuori (White fish mountain :), scenery to town and lake archipelaggo
- Tohmajoki Akonkoski - River and rabid (about 40km)
- Gogolev ateljee
- Old Finnish architecture
- Nikolskaja Orthodox church
- Statue of Petri Shemeikka (one of our poem singers :)
- Old Ruskeala mine (again some 40km)
- Sortavala culture house (earlier hotel Seurahuone)
- Sortavala markets (if you are ontime, cheap fish nets e.g. 60m*3m :)
Right, hope you have fun there, you have been in Karelia so you know what to wait.
Btw, last year there were singing festivals, I think that they are next time in Sortavala 2015, on coming summer in Petroskoi.
If you like off-beaten-path and you have friends with car to help you, you might be interested in the miracle of lake Ladoga. You need to drive some 100km east (close to place called Rajakontu) and there you see it, standing on the bank. When you watch towards the horizon, you can't decide wether the sea is towards the sky or vice versa, they kind of change places :) It has mentioned to be the eighth wonder but probably only by us.
At the moment i don't know if we will have access to a car for the more distant places you mention. I have found a website in English that lists many building which i am looking forward to viewing. Certainly after my visit i will be doing a Sortavala page and reviewing with photo's the places of interest there.
Yep and if you like I can search you a list and probably a map also about those buildings famous to us, I know those exist but I need to surfe in Fin Karelia societies web pages (if you some day visit Finland and Joensuu, there at least used to be a miniature model of Sortavala center. I check it next time when I am there, I visit J multiple times annually, mostly during summers.
