We will be visiting Shanghai in March and would like some guidance as to the ancient water towns for day trips from Shanghai. I would take public transportation should I get a local guide or can I do it myself.

I would like to go to Mount Mt. Sanqingshan would it be possible. we are very used to spending nights on China trains so that is not a problem. we want to see lots but we dont want to be crazy busy, We most want to see real china (life), nature and I (not my husband) want to see shanghai. of course we dont have much money, we wont be flying or doing anything to fancy except parks. Also, I would appreciate any suggestions on accommodations in Pudong that has rooms with 2 double beds; would like to stay in a nice area with ample shopping & restaurants.
