Does anyone know what's the best way to get to Rijeka from Dubrovinik (and back)this September? How are the roads for drivng, how long would it take? Are there any good connections with ferries with good seats/cabins(overnight?)? Direct flights? How far is it from Pula to Rijeka (by car?)?
Any advice/experience would be very welcome.
Connections from Dubrovnik to Rijeka are not very good.
There is a ferry two days in week. It takes a day and a night - full 21 hours. Good if you have time to enjoy the scenic ride between Dubrovnik and Split and if you have money to book a cabin for the overnight part of the journey (Split to Rijeka).
There are direct buses several times per day, but the journey takes 12,5 hours! If you decide to take a bus it is worth considering splitting the journey in two and taking a break either in Split or in Zadar.
For driving, the best is to use route planner at http://map.hak.hr/en
Dubrovnik to Rijeka:
607 km, 6 hrs 15 min (note that this involves taking the toll motorway)
Rijeka to Pula: 107 km, 1 hr 20 min
I don't know if you will have a car, if you are planning to rent one it might be worth checking the option Rijeka to Zagreb (by car) combined with a flight Zagreb to Dubrovnik. Flights can be cheap, you can drive Rijeka to Zagreb in about 1,5 hrs. There is also a direct bus from Rijeka to Zagreb airport that is operated by Pleso prijevoz.
Hope this helps.
