I am flying into Santiago and land at 11pm on Saturday night. I fly out from Lima at 7am on Saturday two weeks later. I was wondering if people had suggestions about how I should go about my itinerary? Here is a list of things I want to do:
-Climb Machu Picchu
-Party in Santiago
-At least one good hike outside of Machu Picchu
-Eat Great Food and drink local beer/wine
Want to do:
-See Patagonia, if only for a day
-Waterfalls if there are any good ones
We are on a budget, but not too much around1000 for whole trip (including porters/fees for climb). Please tell me if this is realistic? I've looked up hostels and it looks like that will run about15/day. And I'm assuming20/day for food and drink is sufficient? That leaves up to35 for travel (flights, trains, buses) and side stuff (climb, souvenirs). If anyone could shed some light it would be so much appreciated. As it stands, it is me and a good friend from college going, 2 24 year old males. We would like to make sure 2-3 nights we get decent sleep, but can trek through and deal with it being a fast-paced trip. Also if any trains/buses are longer than 6 hours (unless it is a comfortable overnight bus/train), we would rather just fly and will up our budget.
We are arriving in Santiago from Australia on Thur 26th Feb & would like to rent a furnished apartment for approx 3 weeks. Can anybody recommend a 2-bedroom apartment, close to the city centre & close to a metro station. We are not after 5-star, just a clean unit with mod cons.
I'm thinking about taking a one year and a half course in Santiago...
I would like to know what the average for renting a room or a small apartment is. Nothing too fancy, nothing too crappy. Something normal, in a normal neighborhood.
Does anybody know a website where I could search for posible places?
Good evening VTists,
I have a question that I'm hoping someone who is knowledgeable in Chilean bus logistics can answer. I'd be happy to send some good vibes back in return.
My girlfriend and I are getting into Santiago by plane from Easter Island at 8:30PM and we would like to take an overnight bus to Puerto Montt right away if it is possible. Through the TurBus site I see a couple different possibilities but I'm confused about their departure points:
Stgo.Vitacura, Stgo.Sazie, Stgo.Borja O.59, Stgo.T.Alameda, Stgo.Tnal.Sur105-106
Does anyone know which one is closest to the airport? Or should I say-- if my flight arrives ontime does it sound reasonable to be able to get from the Arturo Merino Benitez Airport to Stgo.Borja O.59 bus departure point by 10:15PM?
Also, does anyone know the differences between the classes? I'm seeing CLASICO, SEMI CAMA, SALON CAMA, PREMIUM. I personally don't care about the class type but I'm sure my girlfriend would prefer a bed.
Sorry to ask so many questions. It would be easier if the Turbus website was a little more informative.
Hi I wonder how long the distance is between the international airport in to the city by taxi...is it safe? Whats the price rate from the airport to the city. regards/Micke

Hi I know this is a Travel forum, but wondered if anyone who lives in Santiago and speaks English, might be able to point me in the right direction as my Farther was born and lived in/or in the surrounding areas of Santiago.
I never knew him as he died when I was a infant in the late sixties.
I know he moved to the UK in the 1930s/40s possibly fought in the Spanish civil war, and thats about it.
Thanks in advance for any help.
We are 3 people traveling to Santiago on 19 Sept for 2 nights before head to Easter Island, is there any hostel/pension with private room under US$80 per night for 3 people ? please recommend (i read the travel guide but they are too expensive for us)

We will be in Valparaiso - Santiago for one day. I know, I know. Not much but we have to take what we can get.
We are cruising into Valparaiso on the Queen Mary 2 on Jan 26th . We will be in port from from about 7am until 7 pm and are looking for suggestions on how best to spend the day.
We are looking for someone to pick us up and show us Valpariso and Santiago. A more real vist and not only the usual tour groups tour sites. The kind of tour we would give to someone coming to San Francisco. Places to eat, walk, sit and watch, etc. We could pay for a car and driver, tour guide, civilian or whatever.... (we are in our 50's very active and well traveled)
Any suggestions would be welcome.

I have checked the answers in Santiago forum back to 2004, but except one answer did not find a satisfying result.
1) which bus companies go from Santiago westward into Argentina to or via Mendoza ? I know it is Turbus, Andesmar and CATA.
Any others ?
2) do you know of websites to look up the itineries ?
I found the Turbus website here on VT (, but no other websites. Unfortunately, Andesmar does not list their schedules to towns outside of Argentina.
3) most important: is it necessary to make seat reservations for January 23, next year ? Or would they still have tickets available if I turn up, say 3 hours before I want to get on a bus ?
thanks in advance
I have some Chile tickets. I suspect they came from Santiago, but I'm not absolutely sure. Can anyone identify them visually? It is difficult for me because I do not know Spanish and Chilean ticket 'construction'. Most of them seem to be absolutely identical (numbers above and below, inscription of type - Escolar or "no drugs").
If anyone can help and if it NOT agains the forum rules, I may upload the scans.
Thanks for your help
I have read about the Visit Chile Airpass, but can't find any info about it on Lan's website. Does the program still exists? I called LAN, and the CSR didn't have a clue? Anyone?????
Near the Plaza Brasil in Santiago there is a large (takes up the whole block), pink church with two towers. In the middle of the towers is a black iron cross and a little below the cross there is a dove. There is a gate in front of the church that is usually locked. Does anyone know the name of this church? I was there a few weeks ago and can't find the name anywhere in my notes :(
We may be arriving into Santiago by TurBus at 6:15am. Our flight from Santiago - Easter Island departs at 9:30am. Do we have enough time to get from the Coach station to the airport? We'll probably need to be at the airport 2hrs prior, so around 7:30am leaving us with around an hour to get to the airport. How do we get there from the coach station?
Does anyone know anything about the 'Rapido' train service that goes from Santiago to Puerto Montt?
I am currently living here in Santiago with my boyfriend and will be for the next 8 months. My parents are coming to visit and would like to travel on this train journey they have read about. I am trying to find out more information for them for example prices etc.
If anyone has any knowledge about this it would be a wonderful help.
Thanks so much!!

Hi all, I'll be arriving in Santiago in Mid-March to live and work there for 4 months, and I was hoping someone may be able to give me a little advice on renting somewhere to live while I'm there. I'm 23, so sharing a flat with students or young professionals would be ideal. Is there a particular newspaper that has good listings? Or should I have a look at the noticeboard in the local university? Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Hey all! I'm headed to Santiago, Chile, next Wednesday, and wonder if anyone can recommend a good dentist. US dental care is way too expensive for me, and last year I got a great deal on a crown in Guatemala! I'm looking to get a general check-up, and think I might have a cracked filling. Anyone have any tips?
