cycling in the Netherlands

Hi, my husband and I want to have a cycling holiday in the Netherlands in August, using one place as our base. We want flat, scenic, towns and villages and generally a nice place. This would be our first trip of this nature and we would be on road bikes. Any help would be great as I really don't have much of a starting point.

I would have said the first thing to do was decide where in the Netherlands you want to go to (Haarlem, Leiden, Delft..), but as you are in the Zeeland forum, you could base yourself in Middelburg: richardtulloch.wordpress.com...
Another possibility would be to look at organised tours and see if their itineraries sound interesting, e.g.:
hembrow.eu/cycling/selfguide...
freewheelholidays.co.uk/cycl...
vangoghtours.com/holland.htm...

Don't know how long you will be in Holland, but you could consider a base for a couple of days and then move to another town. They rent bikes everywhere.

Just a suggestion for a couple or day trips :
A surprisingly varied cycling region, just outside Amsterdam with a couple of small fortified towns and a lot of remains of the Water Defence Line (Unesco World heritage) ; see [original VT link]

Enjoy,
Edward
