Is it reasonably safe to rent a car and tour on your own in the DR? Road conditions? Areas to avoid? I am interested in birding and hiking in National Parks. How are the resorts in Puerto Plata?
Hi to anyone who's travelled to the domincian in the past while. I m wondering if anyone suggests taking anti malaria tablets before travel. I'm on the fence about what to do as this is my first time travelling to the Dominican. Thanks for any advice!

Hoping to buy a nice diamond ring when we're here in 3 weeks time, was wondering what prices are like here? I've heard they are unbelievable and knockout, but can't seem to find an example of what anyone has paid, or what prices are per gram.
Any help would be appreciated
Hi. I am thinking about renting a vehicle when I visit the DR, but I hear that the drivers are maniacs and don't follow the rules of the road. Was this just to scare me off from driving, or is it true? My longest trip would be from Puerto Plata to Semana. Do I dare? Any suggestions? Thanks
I will be travelling DR for a week Dec 14. I am travelling alone and just had some gen questions. I am a single guy, so I am looking for night life, bars etc. It seems from previous posts that Sousua is the place to be (?) Can anyone recommend any 'decent' hotels. I'm hearing the Waterfront is pretty good/cheap. Is the layout such that one could walk from place to place or is a cab/bus needed? Is it worth it to find a good cabbie and pay him to show me around? (If this is the case, can anyone recommend someone?) I was also considering a cpl nights in Sousa and some time in Puerta Plata as well. I'd like to mingle with the locals, and not looking for the AI/tourist experience. All help on the above is greatly appreciated.
Can anyone provide a phone number or email address to this resort? Thanks!
Hi there, we're staying at the Sun Village Resort in Puerto Plata and would love to get out of the resort and actually experience some "real" Dominican Republic, not just a pretty beach in a fancy resort but also some cultural and historical aspects of the Dominican Republic. We're there for a week.
It seems a little difficult to get out of the resort, as there's nothing around. I'm sure the resort people would be happy to get us a taxi for a 500% markup, but I'll pass on that. And I'm not a big fan of being hauled around with 20 other clueless tourists in a big bus to carefully selected manicured locations and shops.
What would you recommend? Hire a taxi for a day? How can I get a taxi that is not doing a kickback to the resort? How much might that be? Where should/could we go?
It's myself, my wife and our 2-yr old toddler. He's a pretty good traveller and has already been to 9 countries in his 2-yrs of life so we'll enjoy most things within reason.
Oh yes, and I'm fluent in Spanish (native speaker) so not too worried about the language.

I going to travel to Sosua-Puerto Plata and I'm thinking to stay in Sosua Bay Resort, one friend of mine told that is the best hotel at sosua.
Could somebody give more information about Sosua?
Mick here from Newcastle Upon Tyne in the UK. I was just wondering if anyone could give me the heads up on the weather out there. Preferrably a local.
Recent weather reports would give me the impression that it is a bit miserable and I am coming to vacation there soon.
I would really appreciate if anyone can tell me what it has been like out there?
Thanks so much
Is here anyone who had a vacation in Puerto Plata in july. Can someone tell me what kind of weather it was out there?
I leave in july to Puerto Plata and i hope there is more sun than clouds and thunderstorms.
I hope someone knows an answer on this question.
How any one stayed in one of these resorts? I am going in the fall and would like to know which is is better. THANKS!

Will the course be green and will I find players
anyone know anything about it?
A friend and I (both 25 yr old males) are looking into an all inclusive in Purto Plata / Playa Doral at the end of sept. We are wondering what awaits us. We are both single and looking to have a good time down there, hopefully get out for a few 'night's on the town'. Is that a descent time to go? What kind of costs are we looking at for a good 'party' night. Is there any clubs/discos that anyone can recommend? Are the disco's at the resort good aswell? Also, if anyone has also been to varadero, would you recommend one over the other?
Thanks very much
my partner and i are travelling to the riu mambo in puerto plato on the 23 of this month can you tell me what will the weather be like.Debbie
We will be staying at the Riu Merengue. But plan to visit places off the resort. Any recommendations for bars and clubs? We both speak Spanish and my wife, who is originally from Ecuador, loves dancing to merengue music. So hopefully we can find an authentically DR club with more locals than tourists. Any ideas? Also we would appreciate suggestions on tours and other places to visit in order to have the best and wildest time possible. Thanks!
I would like to know how much and how long it will take to go from the airport to Puerto Dorada? Cheers Steve
Hi there, going to DR in June for 14 days, not one for all inclusives prefer Apt or Hotel bed and breakfast. But have been advised To go all inclusive for cheapness and safety, I am hoping not to do the all in and sample some of the culture and local food. Can any one out there please advise, cheers Steve.
Has anyone been there before? How is the resort? Would you recommend it for a few guys in their early 20s? Any other recommendations in terms of all-inclusive resorts?
Hi we are looking for a 2 or 3 bedroom self catering place to rent for 3 weeks next january in or within very easy walking distance of the beach / shops in sosua.Ideally we would like a small villa / bungalow with a pool - but would be glad to hear of any suggestions - especially if people can recommend somewhere where they have had a good experience! we're on a resonably tight budget - somewhere around or preferably under £600 per week. We've looked at Villa Brigitte but it's just a little too far away from the town - we're going to hire a car for part of our stay but not all of it. Also, does anyone have any suggestions for good CHEAP car hire in Sosua? thanks ever so much
Hi all I am traveling to DR with 2 buddies in may this year and we were looking to stay at blackbeards but they are booked up. We are looking for a nice hotel or villa close to blackbeards. Can anyone tell me how close Sousa is to Puerto Plata. We will be driving so we can get around. We are not looking for the all inclusive because they restrict you. I have been to Puerto Plata 2 times and loved it. Thanks if you can give me any information.

Hi there I am travelling to Puerto Plata with my family in April and I was just wandering if anyone could tell me the best things to use to avoid getting bitten by Mosquitos I am worried as I have a 19 month old child and I dont want him bitten.
We are planning a trip in Nov 2007, and everywhere you read, it makes it seem like it rains all day, every day.
Is it rainy like hawaii? or only at night?
I understand, it's weather, and it can change - but there has to be some sort of pattern/average.
We are going either way to to Puerto Plata, but may change dates...
We are staying @ the Lifestyle Villa's - how are those? They look really nice..
Address would be nice... Where do I go ???
