Toddler & baby friendly accommodations  (3 Answers)

Hello! We are looking to spend a week in a resort located anywhere from Cairns to Port Douglas. We will have a three year old and a ten month old. Ideally, it would be good to stay in an apartment with a swim out pool frontage so that we can swim and relax whilst the kids are napping. The Sea Temple is a bit on the expensive side, but the Mantra and the Oaks resorts (Port Doug) don't look brilliant.

Does anyone have any other solutions please? Many thanks!

Cairns & Port Douglas  (8 Answers)

I am visiting Australia for the first time in March and will be spending 4 days in Port Douglas and 3 in Cairns. Is it more cost effective for me as a solo traveller to hire a car for a week or is public transport good enough? I would like to avoid expensive tours if possible. Thanks

How do I get around town on a budget?  (2 Answers)

Hi there, just got here and am staying at the Ramada resort, it's a little out of town and I don't have a car.
What's the best way to get around that isn't too expensive, and same goes for what should I do/see while I'm here?

Dinner recommendation  (1 Answer)

We will be in Port Douglas for our 10th wedding anniversary in early August and would like to have a special dinner on the special day. Cost isn't an issue, but we will have our 16 month old daughter with us so it needs to be a child-friendly place. No kids menu necessary as she just eats off my plate. I would appreciate any suggestions for which restaurant.

Snorkelling with a 1 year old  (1 Answer)

My husband and I are going to Port Douglas to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary in early August. We will have our 16 month old daughter with us too. We would love to go for a day trip snorkel tour. I'm looking for advice about the best tour, considering the type of boat and destination.

We will be staying in Port Douglas for 7 nights and Cairns for 2 nights, so preference would be to do the day tour from Port Douglas. Obviously we will take turns snorkelling as one of us will need to look after Siena. I know there are 2 types of tours - one type is just on a boat for the whole day and the other type is a boat trip to an island where you can snorkel off the shore. I like the idea of the island since it means Siena can run around and play at the water's edge while one of us snorkels, however I don't want to go with this option if the coral isn't as spectacular as snorkeling off a boat only tour if you know what I mean. These tours are not cheap, so I want to make sure we get to see some amazing coral. I've seen some of the tours that go to an island advertise glass bottom boats, which could be good for Siena but she is also very young and won't really understand what she is seeing. Siena is generally content anywhere she can run around (supervised of course) so any feedback about specific boats would be appreciated. Our entertainment book has a discount for tours with Silver Series, so any specific feedback about their tours would be great (that is a boat only tour).

Thanks in advance.

Living in Port Douglas  (2 Answers)

Hi, there is a possibility myself and my family will be moving to Port Douglas. I will start by saying it looks stunningly beautiful there. My concern is the wildlife - crocodiles, snakes etc? May sound far fetched - sorry, but where I will be coming from we have no crocodiles, tree snakes etc. Can I expect to see a lot of crocodiles, snakes, frogs etc? and will I see any or many in my house / yard?

Beaches in November  (6 Answers)

I've read so many guides that say that November is the start of the stinger season. Does anyone know if that was the case in 2012? Has it been delayed over the last couple of years I'd really love to take the family, mid Nov, but we want to go to FNQ for a BEACH holiday (like when we go to the Gold Coast) not just a pool holiday at a resort, but I'm worried about the stingers. When I read of netted areas on Four Mile Beach, what sort of radius are we talking? And are these netted areas in patrolled areas? Any help will do! I'm this close to booking my flights, but with much reluctance about the potential negative at that time of year!

Where to stay in Port Douglas  (18 Answers)

Please can anyone advise us where to stay in Port Douglas, we are from UK visiting family in Brisbane in late Sept & would like to go to the Barrier Reef in middle of Oct. It seems flying is the easiest way to get there & we can see you fly into Cairns but we have been told that Port Douglas is a quieter & possibly nicer place to stay???. My wife will just have had her 60th Birthday & I am 65, we have only been to Australia once before & then we stayed all the time with family but this time we thought it nice to venture off for a week or so on own own, HELP... I would really appreciate any recommendation on reasonably priced B&B's or Hotels etc & any info on where would be the best area to stay. Also any general info on trips etc to Rainforest & Reefs, any tips on saving money would be really valuable ( it seems alot more expensive since we came there 5 yrs ago). Thanks very much any suggestions would be most welcome.

Daintree Tropical Tours in March?  (4 Answers)

I'd like your opinion on whether March 12 next year would be a reasonable day to book Tony's Tropical tour out of Port Douglas. Our cruise ship is in port that day and I'm tossing up whether to book with Tony or do the train to Kuranda + skyrail. Port time is about 8-9 hours, but it's the weather that could put a damper on tour plans. I note that most people do the Tony tour in the dry season. The only way to avoid bad weather is to wait until the day and book something at the tender wharf in Port Douglas.
Your thoughts?

travel on a budget in Port Douglas  (34 Answers)

I come to PD in October 2012. I will be there only 4 days. Thinking to rent a sleeping van to cut back our expenses. Is it a good idea? Where else in PD we can stay on a budget? I would be pleased to cook by myself also.

Snorkeling trip question  (11 Answers)

I am going to be in Port Douglas in July on the Dawn Princess. The GBR is on my bucket list, and this looks like the best chance I will have to see it. Technically I have a PADI OW certificate, but my granddaughter does not dive, and I've had pneumonia so I have lung problems now which I think would preclude my diving. I have been swimming/snorkeling recently

I first booked a snorkeling excursion to the GBR with the ship, but they say that the age limit is 12 to 70 years and while my granddaughter is 12, almost 13, I am 74 and so too 'old' for this excursion. (I don't know what happens to you at 70).

So I booked an excursion with Quicksilver for the two of us with an advanced snorkeling tour. They have no age restrictions. They say that their dock is about 80 meters from the tender dock of Princess and I should be able to walk that far (I will use a scooter on the ship).

Then I thought - how about a helicopter ride one way. I did a helicopter ride with my grandson over the Hawaii volcano and it was terrific. But to do that I'd have to rebook. It is expensive (double the other tour). Is it worth it? Is the snorkeling about the same? Would we come back on the Quicksilver boat?

Port Douglas - Is It Worth Visiting COOKTOWN?  (4 Answers)

Will be in Port Douglas this July. Several questions:

Is 4 days enough time in Port Douglas. In 1990 we had 2 weeks in Cairns and visited Daintree & Port Douglas, and outer reef.

COOKTOWN

Have not visited previously. Thought we could drive there in hire car, should it be a day trip or overnight stay. I presume road is sealed the whole way.

PALM COVE

Is there much on offer here other than resort accommodation. We are active oldies and like to do things during the day and sit by the pool around 5pm.

Thought we might split our time 3 nights Port Douglas, 3 nights Palm Cove and 1 night Cooktown.

Also want a half day fishing excursion on charter boat, any suggestions?

Mike

To travel or not to travel ?  (5 Answers)

HI everybody,

My husband and i are planning a week away with our 3 year old daughter at christmas time. We really want to come up to Port Douglas but I am so hesitant as i have read that it is cyclone season.. What was the last week of December like this year?? Have you had rainy days, or has the sky held up some beautiful blue skies?? Nothing worse than spending a whole lot of money and not be able to enjoy the summer days..

Thanks guys,
Eleni

Underwater Camera Hire Palm Cove/Port Douglas  (6 Answers)

Hello all!

I will be in Palm Cove this time next week and I am looking to hire an underwater camera for our day-trip to the Great Barrier reef. We are lodging in Palm Cove so a location there would be preferable. Our tour will be leaving from Port Douglas so I suppose that that would be the alternative location to pick up a camera.

Please and thank you in advance.

Advice required for January trip  (3 Answers)

Hi All,

my parents are vsiting me in Australia for the 1st time next January. Alot of people have recommended Port Douglas to me as a must see. However they are travelling from Ireland and are not used to tropical conditions (extreme heat, humidity etc).

Could someone advise whether the weather in January will significantly impact their holiday, as while they're keen to see the reef etc, they fairly senior and wouldn't handle poor conditions very well.

kind regards
Michael

Bushwalking around Port Douglas

Has anyone done any bushwalking south of Port Douglas. I'm going to have a few days spare in a few weeks and have been thinking about places like Black Mountain in the Mowbray State Forest see . At about 1000m above sea level and so close to the coast the views should be spectacular. Any ideas on whether there is track to the summit?
