We had been hoping to visit Pondicherry in October 2010, flying in rather than taking the bus. We now discover that the airport is closed to everything but the local flying school. Does anybody have any information as to when it might be reopening?
If it is due to reopen in time for us to get to Pondicherry, can anybody let me know which airlines might be flying to it and from where?
Many thanks for any help.
Hi - currently there are various reasons why the airport is not operational and no time for the actual opening seems to be set. You can fly to Chennai and then take a bus, train, or private car/taxi to Pondicherry. Drive is about 2 1/2 -3 hours.
If the airport opens, it's likely that the main airlines and some of the budget airlines will fly there. You can check on their sites as the time gets closer. Airlines would include Jet Airways, Kingfishers, Air India/Indian Airlines, SpiceJet.
Enjoy Pondicherry - it's a lovely place!
Many thanks for the info. It looks like our decision to include it in our itinerary will just have to wait until nearer the time.
Keep checking Tony because if it does open up, it's likely the airlines will be offering really good fares on the "new" route.
