Hi, we're planning on visiting Ketambe for a 4 day jungle trek, and from there go to Pulau Banyak Islands- what is the best way/method to get to Singkil to get the ferry please? And time for this trip?
After few days on the island we would then like to go to lake toba for a couple of days then on to Barastagi before going back to Medan - is this the best route to do? Time required from Singtel to lake toba? And cost?
I am planning a trip with my 16 yr old son, and have been invited to teach English in North Sumatra. I am wondering if you would advise this trip, as to safety? Pleaseee help me with any advice you have!
I planned to have 3 days vacation Indonesia. 1st day i straight to berastagi. 2nd day I planned to go for a Mount Sibayak trekking and in evening go to lake toba. The 3rd day I planned to have a tour in lake toba for a while and then shoot to medan airport. Is it possible?
I'm going to have a solo backpacking trip to Lake Toba in 2 more days on Apr 30th. I need an advise in terms of travel timing.
Expected to reach Kuala Namu Int Airport on Wed Apr 30th @1400 hours. Any idea the fastest way to get to Lake Toba from KNO airport? FYI I've booked accommodation somewhere in Tuktuk Siadong, Samosir Island. Not sure if I need to get a ferry ride from Lake Toba to the hotel.
Since I'm travelling alone which transportation recommended? I'm just scared I can't catch a ferry as they said last ferry from Parapat is 7pm.
My flight back will be on Sat May 2nd @1400
Hope to hear from you guys soon. =)
We will be in Sumatra for only one day, from 6:00a.m. until 8:00p.m. on a Saturday in April, 2014. We would like to spend it with the elephants in Tangkahan. Can someone please tell us (1.) if it's feasible to make the journey from Belawan to Tangkahan and back to Belawan in that time period, (2.) the distance / how long the trip is from Belawan to Tangkahan, (3.) what types of transportation are available for this trip -- car and driver? train? bus? ferry? -- and (4.) whether one needs to make advance reservations for transportation and also to wash the elephants. Many thanks for any guidance you may be able to provide.
I am due to fly into Medan this saturday (18th), is it safe? and is the area bukit lawang safe to visit?
We are a family of four (two older teens) who are interested in going to Sumatra. We have about 16 days (including travel to/from Australia) and were considering flying in Medan, seeing orangutans in Bukit Lawang and possibly trekking a bit there (son is very fit; us not as much!) or possibly saving trekking to do so with elephants in Tangkahan, which sounds amazing. We also want to fit in Lake Toba and a 5+ day beach holiday at the end. We are wondering for the beach part if we should then go up to Banda Ache and on to Pulau Weh (is there snorkelling there as well as diving and is there anything for the kids to do if they get sick of relaxing?) or fly to Padang at go to cubadak paradisovillage where there seems to be diving and snorkelling. As I write all this, I think it sounds ambitious for two weeks, so would like advice about what the best options are. We've been diving/snorkelling in Bunaken, Komodo/Flores and Barrier Reef so wonder how marine life around Sumatra compares. Also visited orangutans in Kalimantan via river boat. We are hoping that Sumatra will be different to those trips to add to our love of Indonesia and our view of how diverse the country is. Thank you for any advice you can provide!
I will heading to Lake Toba in October, can some1 suggest if this is the right season to visit lake Toba.
Any Precaution to be taken there, Also please let me know if any one is visiting that place during tht time, we can meet up :)
Cheers to all!!
Will be travelling to Medan(4D3N in Dec 12 with family (16 adults & 4chld(7-10yrs))-budget travel. Intend to visit Lake Toba & plan to stay 1N each in Parapat, Brastagi & Medan. Please suggest decent accommodations & places on interest to visit?? Also, pls recommend transport together with tour guide with reasonable rates??
My friend and I will be traveling to Medan at the end of April. I have read many blogs and travel notes about Medan, Parapat and Pulau Samosir. It seems fine for the activities, but, the only problem I have is now the transportation from Medan to the Parapat itself.
So, we will be taking Jetsar from Singapore and ETA is at 5PM. We will most probably spend a night at Medan, and hence will be going to Parapat the next following morning. The questio, is there any public bus that can bring us there? If yes, where can we take it and how long the journey will be?
We don't usually go on tour deals, as we prefer to indulge and learn about the culture, people and stuff.
Thanks a lot for your help!
I am arriving in Medan on an Air Asia flight at 5:20pm and want to head immediately to Berastagi without staying the night in Medan. Does anyone know if there are evening buses from Medan to Berastagi?
i planning to go to Medan this april. just wanna know wether RM350 per pax is worth or there is more cheaper package offered by other travel agents? my package included 1N in parapat & 1N in Medan. Also included Hotel with breakfast, meals, tour guide, entrance fees, transport, ferry boat to Samosir ISland, Parking & Toll.
Can any recent traveller give me an approximate price for a taxi from the airport to Amplas for a bus to Parapat please?
Thanks in advance

Hie,be over there in a few days but just hit a problem, lost my debit card in Bangkok which I am sorting out with the bank today.Although I have a few travelers cheques left I will need to now withdraw money from my visa card.Is this going to be a problem there. Also is it possible to receive money transfer on the Island in case of any unforseen problems? Many thanx!
Does anybody know how many/what times the boats are from Aceh to Pulau We and how far Aceh port is from the airport as I want to tie my flight and the boat up together. Many thanks!
What about the weather in Sumatra in March-April? Sill raining?
I will be in Singapore and then Kuala Lumpur (where I am told the weather is fine and dry) in late January 2009 and I am wondering if it is worth taking a trip to Sumatra as I have four days spare. I have looked on Google Earth and noticed Lake Toba which looks good, can anyone tell me if the weather is OK in this region in late January? And what about mosquitos?
Also, is there anything else worth seeing or must see in this area before heading back to Kuala Lumpur for my return flight back to London?
I've worked out that I'm going through Indonesia at the height of the rainy season. I will arrive just before Christmas and leave towards the end of January, travelling through Sumartra, Java and Bali. Has anyone been there at the same time of year and just how bad is this rain going to be???
Looking for another friendly person that is interested in sharing costs of a hire car & driver. Intending to explore above areas over 5 days, sometime after 4 July 08.
I'm starting a six month trip toSsouth East Asia on October. I'm planning on spending Christmas in Pulau Samosir. Do I need to book accomodation beforehand or can I just turn on on Christmas Eve??? Don't want to spend Christmas Day sleeping on the beach!!!!! Any recommendations would be welcome.
I did post almost a similar questions a month ago, unfortunately I didnt get any reply. We, 3 of us adults, plan to travel from Medan to Samosir on the 29 Aug 2007 and stay there for 2 nights. On the 31st. we plan to leave Parapat for Medan. On the way we hope to stop a few hours at Brastagi. The cheapest charges for the above trip quote by 3 companies was RP 1,400,000.We only requested for a driver, not a travel guide. We also didnt intend to do sigthseeing along the way except at Brastagi on the way back.
By the way, Pamela, I did contact your friend Ajad and mentioned your name, but his price is RP 1,900,000. for the trip Medan-Parapat on the 29th.Aug and Parapat-Brastagi(overnight at Brastagi on 31st Aug) and Brastagi-Medan on 1st.Sept Another company qoute me at US 236. Carolina quote me at RP 1,800,000
for 4 persons.
We change slightly our plan. Now only 3 of us will be travelling and we will not stay overnight in Brastagi. Carolina Hotel quote us this price :-
29 Aug. Medan - Parapat . RP 600,000 with driver for 3 persons
31st Aug . Parapat - Brastagi - Medan (with a few hours stop at Brastagi)
RP 800,000 for 3 persons. Is it OK ?
When I heard that a van charges RP 70,000 per persons with a maximum passenger of 8, the van is much cheaper. (If we , 3 of us book the whole van, we only pay RP 560,000 ). The questions is can we get this van easily at the airport upon arrival ? We arrive in Medan at 0815 hrs.Or can we get a normal taxi instead of van for around RP 500,000 at the airport. After all they are only 3 of us, we dont need a van.
Can we also get a van or better still a taxi in Parapat for almost the same price (approx. RP 500,000) to go back to Medan. On the way back, we intend to stop for a few hours at Brastagi. We dont mind a slightly higher charges for the sightseeing at Brastagi.
If this is possible we might end-up paying only between RP 1,000,000 -1,120,000, compare to RP 1,400,000 that Carolina is charging us.
Please advise on on this
4 of us adults will be spending 5 days and 4 nights in Medan & surrounding areas from 29th. August to 2nd Sept. 2007.After reading this forum we decided to spend our holidays the following :-
29 August - Arrived in Medan by AirAsia form K.Lumpur at 8.15am.
We plan to go direct to Samosir Island for 2 nights stay.We will
be staying in Carolina hotel. The room rate offered was very
The questions are..How do we spend the 2 days there ? How much
will it cost to rent a car with a driver to take us round the
Island for one day ?
31 August - Proceed to Brastagi.
Should we stay overnight in Brastagi ? If yes, can we find a hotel
with a good location that charges between 150,000 to 200,000
rupiah per room OR any type of room that can accomodate 4 of us
for not more than 400,000 rupiah (would appreciate if the hotel
e-mail address can be provided) OR should we just go round
Brastagi and in the evening proceed to Medan ?
1st. Sept - To Medan
Where to stay so that we can go shopping (local product) without
needing to take a taxi. Our budget for hotel in Medan should not
exceed 300,000 per room twin-sharing with breakfast .
As for transport we were offered by Carolina hotel to take us from Medan to Parapat,(on 29th.) then from Parapat to Brastagi (31st.) with overnight stay
and then to Medan (on 1st.) The charges were 1,800,000 rupiah with a driver (however no sightseeing). Is the charges reasonable?
If we skip the Brastagi overnight stay, the charges will be 1,400,000 rupiah.
