New York City

Arabic in New York

While I am your run-of-the-mill American I will be hosting a Kuwaiti citizen this September and he plans on visiting New York. While I have not been there since 1992 I know the layout fairly well. First and foremost is it safe for a Muslim or Arabic person to visit alone? Is there areas to avoid (not just standard crime areas but areas that resent Middle Eastern people). Is there an Arabic or Kuwaiti district (seems like one may be in Brooklyn). I have located the Kuwaiti embassy and will provide him with their contact information for emergency purposes. Any other suggestions?

Your Muslim friend will be perfectly fine in NYC. Both of you must not have any doubt on this regard.

I can't think of any area of the city that your friend needs to particularly avoid. All sorts of people of differing ethnic, religious and lifestyle can be found absolutely in all of NYC's neighborhoods.

I agree with Solodancer, your friend should have no concerns.

And, please don't think I'm being facetious, but what exactly does a "run-of-the-mill American" look like?

Atlantic Ave in the Downtown Brooklyn area has a large Middle Eastern population...
