car hire penang for the over 70s  (5 Answers)

we are two couples just on the wrong side of 70 and are looking to rent a car in penang and drive via ipoh and melaka to JB then taxi to singapore.

it appears that all the car hire companies in penang that have an office in JB limit rentals to those who have not passed 70 years.

does anyone know of a rental company that will rent to the over 70s and has an office in penang and JB?

alternatively, how feasible is it to rent taxis or car and driver for 4 people to travel penang - ipoh, ipoh - melaka and melaka to JB?

Best hawker food in Penang and transport  (1 Answer)

The last time i visited this lovely place was 6 years ago.enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and hawker food. off to penang again on an eating holiday with 5 other gluttons. need help regarding the above:
1) What bus goes from the airport to my hotel Evergreen Laurel 53 Persiaran Gurney and how much is it?
2) Looked at the penang tips on food but they haven't been updated recently. the info goes back to 2005. so would really like to know where to go to have the best
a)char kway teow
b) oyster omelette oh chien
c)chendol
d) peranakan food
e)penang laksa
f)lorbak
g)prawn mee
prefer hawker ambience and price but if the restaurant food is really good, then dont mind paying cos we just love penang food.
3)Do recommend any other food that i may have missed out.
4) how do i get to from my hotel to mcalister road when the sunway georgetown hotel is . i stayed there previously and loved the fact that at night i just needed to step out of the hotel into a wonderland of hawker stalls.
Thank u in advance for your tips. i hail from singapore where food is good but i m of the opinion that penang and malacca food is better!!

ATMs and TCs  (3 Answers)

Hi All,

I've received advice about T.Cheque's no longer being used but I'm uneasy about using my Credit Card for cash advances and purchases. Using the credit card for cash advances also costs, even though its my own money!

I've read about those "cash passport" cards which allow you to top up with cash and withdraw from an ATM... my question is are there any Visa type ATM's in Batu Feringgi ? (I've tried using the ATM locator but it crashes or times out..)
There appear to be some in Georgetown, but I'd hate to have to travel to Georgetown to draw money when I need it for serious eating and drinking :)

Regards
Richo

Is the taxi fare from the airport the Feringgi area fixed, regardless of which hotel you are going to?

Penang: Grand Continental Hotel and other hotel info requested  (10 Answers)

Has anybody stayed at Grand Continental Hotel in Penang? Asiatravel has advertised 160 RM per night for 2 persons incl. tax and breakfast, which seems OK to me, if the hotel is clean, quiet and comfortable.
I will stay in Penang for 3 nights in August directly after a long flight from Europe and I am looking for a really nice hotel to relax from jet lag which is located in the middle of Georgetown and has a swimming pool.
Thanks for all comments and hotel suggestions!

Another mild earthquake...  (3 Answers)

Hi all,

29th March 2005 about 12:10a.m. Penang had another mild earthquake, it wasn't a very serious one but it kept me thinking where on earth around indonesia had it once again, and how serious it is there...We all know that Malaysia don't have earthquake so if we experience the shake, it must have came from somewhere else nearby, probably indonesia.

Let's keep our fingers cross that no one hurts in this incident this time.
Good luck.

Hi,
I was in Penang two months ago on holiday and I found a shop on the 6th floor in Burmah Road. Its called One Stop I think. It has the biggest collection of CD's on sale. I would like to get in touch with the owner. So if anyone of you has the name and address of the shop or their email address, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
