Myanmar (Burma)

Companion Holiday destination to combine with Myanmar

Hi all,
We are planning on going to Myanmar in December/January.We have been to the four main Cities of Myanmar in 2012 and combined that trip with visiting Siem Reap. We expect to spend two to three weeks in Myanmar on this trip and are seeking suggestions as to where else we can go in the region for the other one to two weeks.

Thanks for any suggesstions

Hello Peter.

When you say the four main cities, where do you mean? Rangoon / Yangon obviously and Mandalay, what were the other two? Do you mean Bagan and Inle Lake? If that is the case I will not recommend them again.

A couple of places that I enjoyed are Hsipaw, also known as Thibaw and Magwe. Hsipaw has some lovely local walks and very pleasant scenery and a very laid back feel. Magwe is only a smallish place but has a nice position on the Ayerawaddy river. These pages will give you an idea of what they are like.

Hope this assists,

I'm assuming you mean a country to combine with Myanmar? There are direct flights to Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, China, India, and Cambodia (though, you have been there already). One of these countries would be easiest to combine.

I haven't travelled much In SE-Asia or India for that matter but a place I really enjoyed was Laos. Hop over to Bangkok and from there on to vientiane and Luang Prabang.

Plenty of trip reports on travelblogs.com to read where others have travelled. I get a lot of info from that site.

Peter,
I'd try to combine this with both Laos(especially Luang Prabang) and Cambodia(Siem Reap) With the great variety of flight options available you should be able to combine these other 2 countries very efficiently.Don't forget that AirAsia now flys out of Mandalay so this nows saves a bit of backtracking back to Yangon.
You'll have a wonderful time.
Best wishes
Neil

I'm presuming you're referring to Dec 2013/Jan 2014? There are many other interesting places in Myanmar besides the usual Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, Inle circuit. It really depends on what interests you and how much time (and budget) you have.

I personally love the unspoilt beaches in Myeik and trekking in Putao (not sure if tourists are currently allowed there with the KIA situation). Make sure you book your accommodation, flights and other local arrangements in advance though as you will be travelling during the high season where demand outstrips supply!

Thanks to all for your comments. I originally was looking for another country to combine with the next trip to Myanmar and have perhaps narrowed it done to India and/or Sri Lanka as we have been to most other southeast asian countries. We hope that for this second trip to visit places that we did not get to last time such as Bago, Mawlamyaing, Monywa, Taunggyi and especially around Sittwe (hope it opens up again by December).

I was unaware of AirAsia out of Mandalay that would be good.

Thanks All

Thanks again, I think we are now looking at combining our next trip to Myanmar with a trip to northern India in December 2013.
