Hotel, activities, surfing recommendations?  (4 Answers)

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I've written. Well it's time for another trip. I'm hoping to go to Maui to experience Hawaii for the first time with my husband

I don't know much about Hawaii. Just know they have great coffee and a great place to learn to surf.

Does anyone know of a great hotel near the waters with a nice beach that's also near activities like surfing, snorkelling, hiking, kayaking? We like the adventure type of vacations.

Hopefully to get some ideas and not break the bank.

Thanks.

Does anyone know of any restaurant walking tours that are $30? When looking around for Maui attractions one was noticed, but, for some reason, I can't find it now.

Dilemma for 7-night stay in Maui after Waikiki  (3 Answers)

Hi,

I've done a fair bit of research on different areas and hotels for a 7-night stay in Maui (17-24 April). For now, the only decision I've been able to make is to spend the first 2 nights at the Travaasa Hana.

I did also provisionally book The Mauian for the following 5 nights to stay in an OK property at a cheaper price, but looking back at the photos on Tripadvisor, I'm actually not sure of how nice the rooms are.

So, back on the drawing board, I've narrowed my choice between Kaanapali and Wailea. I know they are very different, but both attractive for different reasons. Kaanapali offers cheaper accommodation and easy access to more things to do, but Wailea properties tend to be more luxurious and offer better opportunities to relax, away from the hustle and bustle.

Mind that the 7 days in Maui will be after 6 nights in Honolulu/Waikiki.

Looking at rooms at prices, I've set my eyes on the following properties:

1) Westin Maui Resort & Spa (simple looking rooms and nice bathrooms, good 5th night free and free breakfast rate, adult only pool)

2) The Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas (same reasons as above, nice reviews)

3) Hotel Wailea (secluded, good value for money, but far from the beach)

4) Andaz by Hyatt (fantastic design)

Considering that it's not school holidays time, will Maui be fairly busy with families with kids? I was going to book either of the Westin properties, but I am now a bit weary about the scale of the developments, how busy they may be and the scarcity of opportunities to unwind and relax.

I am looking forward to receiving some advice!

Shoes for hiking

we go to Maui this September. We are trying to figure out what shoes would be best for some hikes we plan to do.

The shoes we plan to bring are Brooks Running shoes, Keens H2 Newport Hiking Sandals, and flip flops

The hikes we are planning are:

Twin Falls: we plan to wear the Keens, as we will be walking thru water and plan to go into the water falls. It doesn't make much sense, to wear tennis shoes to take them off and put on flip flops.

Waihee Ridge Trail: Here is where i am not certain. A lot of post saying Hiking boots are best on this trail for traction. we are not bring hiking boots during travel. It doesn't seem worth it for a 2 hour hike. So I am left with the tennis shoes or my keens. My keens probably have more traction, but the tennis shoe probably has more surrounding support.

Lodging Inquiry - Lahaina, Kihei vs. Paia; pros & cons?  (1 Answer)

Hi everyone, I'm searching for affordable, quaint lodging on Maui and have found several condos in Lahaina, Kihei and Paia within our price point (under $200 per night); however, I can't decide on which part of Maui we want to base ourselves for 4 days/3 nights.

Besides lounging on the beach, our plan is to mingle with our friends staying in Wailea, attend a traditional luau, drive the road to Hana and visit Haleakalā National Park.

Can you give me specific pros/cons for each city I'm considering? I read that Paia would be a great place for the road to Hana drive (as well as Mama's Fish House - yum!).

Thanks so much, in advance! :)

Easy walks/hikes to sights?  (5 Answers)

Hi everyone. Traveling in May - our first time in Hawaii. Staying on Maui 10 days and hope to fill some of the time exploring island's natural sights. Question is- Are the hikes to sights on Road to Hana too difficult for beginners or those with mobility concerns? We're larger folks, but we are relatively active so distance isn't an issue. (We just go slow.) However, I'm concerned about climbing. Can anyone suggest the best stops (on the RTH or other locations) that might be suitable for us? Thanks in Advance!

Road to Hana or road from Napili to Kahului?  (4 Answers)

We are staying north of Lahaina and are wondering which of these routes would serve us best for sight seeing. We are allowing a full day for this journey. Other friends have recommended the Napili to Kahului route, although most seem to talk about the Hana trip. Thoughts?

Whale watching  (2 Answers)

I'm going to Maui with my family (5 adults) next week. Someone had suggested going whale watching with the Pacific Whale Foundation. I've looked on their website, and they seem to offer a multitude of packages to do the same thing (so it seems).

Any suggestions or experiences with these whale watching tours? They seem like a fun family activity for a reasonable price.

I think the rafting option is a no-go, as my mom can't swim and will be scared to death. She'll want the stability of a boat.

Thanks in advance!

Stay close to Haleakala or drive from Lahaina? Jan weather?  (4 Answers)

Hello, We are touring Maui for 8 days. Here is our plan until now:

December 28th: Landing in Kahului at 10:30 AM

December 28th: Drive around West Maui

December 29th: Drive to Hana

December 29th and 30th: Stay in Hana

December 31st: Drive beyond Hana, and the back side of Haleakala

Dec 31st night: Stay near Haleakala or Lahaina?

Rest: Stay in Lahaina.

On the drive back from Hana on 31st, our plan is to stop overnight somewhere close to Haleakala National Park to catch the sunset on 31st or sunrise on Jan 1st. One advantage of staying close is that we don't have to wake up early and drive for 3 hours to catch the sunrise. But on the flip side if the weather is bad on 1st morning, we will have no choice to pick a different day. How is the weather generally in early January? Do you think its better to stay in Lahaina and pick a day to drive up Haleakala depending on the weather?

Thanks.

Road To Hana  (11 Answers)

If I leave from Ka'anapali and return there is the entire road to Hana do able in one day, it gets dark at 6:00pm? What time would I have to leave in the morning and how many hours would it take. Is it better to do the Road to Hana on Saturday, Sunday or during the week because of local traffic? How many miles of unpaved roads are on the Road to Hana and what will the conditions be like in October?

How Long Does it take to drive the Road to Hana  (12 Answers)

How long does it take to drive the entire Road To Hana from Ka'anapali and back using the long route. They say it takes 12-13 hours. We would like to do some hikes, do some snorkeling see the red and black sand beaches. Will the trip be better splitting it into two days? Also, if I decide to get a a place to sleep for a night so I can split it into two days, what is a great location and a "reasonable place to stay. Guest houses, B&Bs and small notes with Island flair would be great. Please send rates if you can.

Where to stay on Maui  (6 Answers)

If we loved Hanalei on Kauai, does anyone have suggestions on where to stay on Maui? Upcountry, Paia, Lahaina or possibly Hana (but not sure about the road to get there :-/)? Other suggestions? It's just the two of us, staying for 5 days. We like paddle boarding, hiking/nature and local restaurants, and would prefer to avoid big, busy resorts.
Any advice much appreciated

Best places in the world to live on the cheap?  (3 Answers)

What are the best places in the world to live on the cheap? I get $600 from disability but made the mistake of staying in major cities of various South American countries when I probably should have explored the jungle areas more. I am currently in Colombia and not sure where to go. Any suggestions?
