We will be leaving Maine sometime Friday or Saturday. We were shocked at the amount of traffic headed south on 95 when we arrived Sunday. Which day and time would be best to leave in order to avoiid the heaviest traffic?
We are taking a sightseeing tour up the new England coast the first week of august 2015.. going as far north possible in the USA.. and we want to stay along the coast.. any tips, or must see places along the way? I have been on numerous sites and know about the main tourist places.. I want to know about some places that may not be as well known. Then we are cutting across maine to go to Niagra.. I think Moosehead lake looks cool, any other places to see inland on the way? Thanks a bunch.. P.S. I'm from the butthole of Ohio by the way, so anything is better than flat corn and bean fields.. :)
I am looking for some advice of where to stay in Maine if I want to go mushroom picking. I will be traveling with a 3 year old. If anybody knows of any specific lodges or B&Bs that would be great. If not, would anybody be able to suggest an area of Maine that's good for mushroom picking. I'll have a cat with me so driving is not an issue.
I'm trying to show my daughter and my wife the beauty of a northern forest. I'm originally from Belarus and it's pretty far north sp the forests have more pine trees moss and of course chanterelles which is what I'm looking for.
I hope this is not too complicated and thank you to everyone in advance.
Were in Biddeford and new to the area and would like to hear about some "must see" places in the area. We have seen most of the coast from here to Wells. Lookin for some inland sites.
Hello members, As I am planning for a spring vacation trip to Maine,USA so I am curious to know that is the atmosphere their is decent and delighful? What are your views on this?
We arrive in Portland around lunchtime 13th May and want to drive to Boston for the 16th May (to give us a day or so to explore Boston). Any suggestions of routes, towns to explore, must experience/do, foodie delights would be greatly appreciated.
I've been looking for a nice writing pen with a photo of the Maine coastline as a birthday gift for our accounting manager. I wrote to the Maine Tourism Board and they responded that I would be able to find it easily online - no such luck. Can you direct me please?
I'm looking for advice about a trip in August. Do you need to book motels in advance or can you usually get rooms on the day you arrive in a town, like you can in California? Many thanks.
I just read your list about 10 iconic foods and you left OUT Maine lobster, Are you kidding me??? Have you ever tried a Custard Apple from Queensland Australia? Crepes from France is like breathing there is no debate about it being good. Sushi from Tokyo Japan, may as well say saki, seriously the only place better for sushi would be in someones home. Maybe that is how you see Maine Lobster.
I was just wondering which are the chances of getting 2 jobs in Maine and is it a tourists' attraction in Summer? What is it like in Maine, does it have a variety of ages?
I have an old film of a hotel with a cannon out front on a hill somewhere we think on the Maine coast, anyone know which hotel it might be?
My wife, 7 yr old daughter, 12 yr old son, and I will be driving up to Maine from NJ next August (2014); it's their first trip to Me, any suggestions?
I will be driving from Portland to St. John, NB, Canada via Augusta, Bangor, etc. I have a couple of hours available. Anything along the way interesting/worth stopping to see?
I will be in Maine at the end of August and will travel between Portland and Lubec. Can anyone recommend a good whale watching tour I can take anwhere along that route? Thanks
I am planning my first visit to coastal Maine at the end of June 2013. I will have 5 nights to spend and need help determining the best location. I was thinking of either staying in one spot as a home base or possibly 3 nights in one spot and 2 nights in another. I would like a picturesque spot on the less-touisty side while still having restaurants accesible. We plan on a day trip as far north as Acadia National Park. Any ideas or favorite spots?
I'm planning a trip for Fall 2013. We're coming from near the Buffalo, NY area and don't want to spend 10 hours in the car, so I'm looking at the Southern coastal area of Maine - possibly as far north as Portland/Bath. I'd like to spend 2-3 days in two or three different locations (though with the right location, staying an entire week instead is fine too). We are antique shop lovers and also lobster lovers! Can anyone suggest a few hotels/B&B's, restaurants, towns to visit and any other good info you can share. Thanks so much!

I will be traveling with my 19 year old daughter.
We would appreciate an insiders' opinion of what to see, what to give a miss, where to go and where to stay. Any input would be welcomed. We both are adventurous, and outgoing and love to discover new things, eat good and local chow and meet new people.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Planning on a camping trip towards the end of August. We do not have a time schedule. We will be driving from VA taking non interstate as much as possible. We like campgrounds that are not crowded and prefer them to have at least a shower. Looking for tips and pointers of what to see, do and "hole in the wall" non franchised diners. Peace.
I will be staying in Guildsboro with my extended family(15 children) for a week in August. This is near Winter harbor. How long will it take me to travel to Bar Harbor and the main park(by car or by ferry) What activities can be suggested with the kids? I read about the Whale Schooner-is it appropriate for children also? Are there other sites nearby?
I am graduating from college and my family wishes to rent a cottage in Maine this August as send-off. I will be traveling with my parents and my sister for a week, give or take a day. There seem to be ton of options for cottage rentals, can anyone help us narrow it down? We are looking for:
- a relatively nice and private cottage,
- South Coast or Midcoast,
- Not too busy of a town,
- ideally on an island near a town but not in the middle of it.
- we don't need a sandy beach; rocky beaches and nice scenery are good enough!
Where should we start looking?
Also, does anyone know a good website for cottage rentals? There seem to be a lot, and I'm not sure which ones are trustworthy...
Good morning! I'm doing a Maine Coast bike trip in September. Trying to get from Vinalhaven Island to Stonington on Deer Isle with my bike via boat. Suprised there is no regular ferry or water taxi for that hop.
Charter would cost me around400. Hoping I can find a few other people to split the cost. Let me know if you're interested. Flexible on date & time.
Planning on a few days here: , toward the end of the trip, but needing additional ideas of spots throughout the state.
Want to see as much as the state as possible, and will have car.
Flying into PWM, and ending the week at the Inn.
Worth venturing all the way up North? and driving the border/coast down? or focus more on coast-only?
Thank you in advance for the ideas!
My hubby wanted me to ask what the weather is like in the New England area in early to mid-October. In Oklahoma we are better equipped to deal with the heat than the cold, so we could use also use tips on what to wear and what to pack. Thanks. I appreciate your kindness.
My husband and I are planning a fall trip to the New England area, including Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. We really want a memorable trip since it may be the only time we get to visit this area. Could you recommend any attractions or activities that fall into the "Don't Miss This" category? Thanks so much.
It's our new "tradition" to take a roadtrip up in the Northeast for Labor Day weekend. In 2009 we went to Boston and hit up a New England Revs' game. In 2010 we went to Vermont and went to a brewery festival.
For this year we are thinking about making Maine our destination... are there any events going on during that weekend that we could hit up as part of our trip?
This picture was just labeled "Devils" I presume that when we wrote the description, we intended to write more. The slide was in with pictures of Cadillac Mt. and Bar Harbor and the Mt. Desert lab. Does anyone know where it was taken?
My girlfriend and I are renting a house in Maine for a week in mid-September. Neither of us have ever been to the area before and would love suggestions and "must do's". We're staying on the coast near Brunswick and would appreciate any suggestions that the forum might provide.
My wife an I plan on traveling to Maine either the last 2 weeks of Sept. or first 2 weeks in October.Which would be the best choice. We are planning on mostly site seeing up the coast. Should we stay at 2 or 3 differant locations or find a central location and drive each day. What areas would you recommend we stay for the differant location and where would we stay for the central location. We were thinking of staying in hotels (best western, hampton etc.) would you recommend any other places, we like staying on the water and also in towns close to shopping and restaurants. What would be places not to miss and restaurants to eat at.Any other info would be great.
Hi. My wife and daughter and I are planning on going to Maine in mid-September. I was wondering if we could/should charter a boat for a few nights. This way we can go to several islands and see Maine from a very different perspective. I searched online and found a few charters, but would like to get some advice and recommendations.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
