Places to visit in lapland with hire car

Hi we are driving around lapland for a few days in late july. We were going to camp where ever we could find a good pozi. Can anyone recommend good places to see in opposed to spending money to soak up the atmosphere? Visual stimulation not wallat stimulation ;)

Northern Lights  (1 Answer)

my wife and I are planning a trip to see the Northern Lights (probably next year)and have heard Finland has the most sightings anywhere in the world. If so where do we go and what time of the year. 2 yrs ago we did the Norwegian Costal cruise and did see the lights 1 night above the Arctic Circle. We want more - so we are looking for a place to stay for about a week that would give us the best opportunity and hopefully have some other activites we can do - dog sled, snowmobile etc.
Anyone have some suggestions?

Ivalo  (2 Answers)

Hello,

I might be in Ivalo/Inari this summer for a summer camp. I was wondering - since I'll be that far north, would it be a good idea to visit Nordkapp or northern Norway? Does anyone know what the approximate travel expenses would be for that?

I would appreciate your help!

Daytrip from Helsinki  (6 Answers)

We are going to be in Helsinki on a cruise ship on Wednesday, Jun 17, 2009 from 6:00 am - 5:00 pm. Originally I thought that we would go to Lapland, but that isn't one of the tours the ship offers. Is that because there is too little time?

Activities in Yllas  (2 Answers)

We are planning to go to Yllas on a skiing holiday, but we also want to do lots of other things, like snowmobiling, husky and reindeer safaris, etc. The problem is we don't know exactly how many of these we'd like to do - if we enjoy the skiing very much, we might be too busy! The travel agent is pushing us to prebook. My question: is it possible to find places to book these things at the resort, or are they really sold out long in advance?

Fabrics for mid-layers of cloting for lapland - advice appreciated, please!!  (2 Answers)

Hello!

I wonder if anyone is able to advise me. Next weekend, I am taking two of my kids on a day trip to Lapland in Finland. I have got us all thermal long johns, long sleeved thermal tops, silk gloves and sock liners, thermal gloves, ski-gloves, wool tube socks, hats, wool balaclavas, neck tubes (if that's a name for them!) and thermal fleeces. I think that's everything. We will be provided with boots and suits. However, I'm trying to fathom out what layers to put between the thermal undies and our fleeces. I have received conficting advice! Sometimes I have been told to avoid cotton and to opt for synthetics such as polyester, but Canterbury Travel say cotton mid-layers are best. Do you know what we should opt for, please? Thank you!

booked!! cabins in Yllas!!  (1 Answer)

HI everyone I have just booked a holiday in Yllas the deal i got was for a cabin-to be allocated on arrival,in Yllas, full board-so I guess we have to trek to the main hotel? and this includes some taster activities...reindeer and husky etc we have 4 nights there, returning to the uk on Christmas eve its booked with first choice.

Lapland in November/December ?  (2 Answers)

Hi,

I'm planning a trip to Lapland between November 25 and December 2 2006.
It'll be a trek around the area (rackets/cross country ski).
My only doubt is on the amount of snow up there on that period.

Would anyone inform me wether it's possible to enjoy racket trek/cross country ski at that time ?

I know I could go later in the winter, but unfortunately I only have these dates free.

Thanks for your help.

Samuel

Accommodation in Lapland  (3 Answers)

First, let me say congrats to the people who participate in this forum. Im reading some answers and its being really useful for me.

I have very very little info about Lapland, so besides visiting the typical destination of Rovaniemi (I found cheap flight) I would appreciate any info or suggestion. Which are the highlights of that magical land for u?

Unfortunately I dont have many days, but something between 4 and 8 days.

I wont use a car. And I would love to see the nature, landscapes, and if its possible, some genuine place where to meet people of the "deep-Lapland".

And, what makes me be a little bit worry is the accommodation, since I hae no idea of placs and options in the area.

Thanks so much, viva laponia y su provincia

Lapland  (2 Answers)

I got married in Saariselka last year and fell in love with lapland. I want to visit lapland again but go somewhere else. Can anyone suggest anywhere which is similar ro Saariselka, somewhere that has loads of winter activities and very pretty but not too touristy. I loved the cosy log cabins. If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful. Thanks.

Kuusamo / Oulanka - What will I need to stop us freezing? Any general Info on Oulanka?  (5 Answers)

Hi everyone and a happy new year.

My wife and I will be staying at the Oulanka Base camp at the end of February. We can't wait.

I would be extremely grateful if someone would be kind enough to list the basics we'll need for such a trip. We have mostly ski wear including gloves, but I understand mittens are better? Also what type of boots will we need? will winter snow boots suffice?

Has anybody been to the basecamp at Oulanka? What's it like?

Thanks for reading.

Lapland Info for a beginner please!!  (2 Answers)

Hi all. My husband and i want to try a completely new holiday experience next year and are really loving the idea of Lapland - Levi in particular. Neither of us have been skiing before and will of course be trying it out there, and are aware that there are many other things to occupy two young adults who are kids at heart anyway, but my only slight concern is whether there will be enough "daylight" in January / February to allow us to do things during the day. I apologise for my complete ignorance on this matter but would appreciate any "light" you can shed on this for me!!!!!

Also i have in my mind this village or camp where it is possible to get up in the morning and walk betwen these activities. Is this a realistic view? Is their a particular district i should be aiming for? All replies appreciated.
