Im heading to LA in May and was really looking forward to seeing Laguna Beach, Newport Beach etc. Does anyone know how far these are from Hollywood (time wise) and the cheapest way of getting there?
You need a car, it takes about an hour to get to Newport Beach, and about 30 minutes from Newport Beach to Laguna Beach.
The best way is to rent a car for the day. This is about an one to one and a half hour drive depending on traffic and non-rush hour driving, 7-9 AM and 3-6 PM. Getting a local friend to drive you would be the cheapest way, but a car is almost a necessity to see the area.
Yes, you'll need to rent a car. From Hollywood take US 101 south to I-110 south. From there take I-405 south and then CA-55 west. CA-55 will turn into Newport Blvd which will eventually hit Pacific Coast Highway (CA-1). Go straight across to get onto the Balboa Peninsula. The main beach area will be to your right. Suggest parking near either the Municipal or Balboa piers (good luck!) and then you can walk down the beach in either direction. Shops and restaurants surround both pier areas. The Fun Zone area is also near the Balboa Pier.
From the Balboa Pier you can take the small ferry across the bay to Balboa Island from which you can drive back onto the mainland. Take a right at PCH to head towards Laguna Beach, a very scenic 10-15 minute drive.
